"A true Grand Cru of the region, with its own unique soils of rock, mineral-rich marls, loam, quartz, shale and limestone" according to Vinous' Eric Guido, the treasures of Montosoli are the crème de la crème of Montalcino, often with Grand Cru prices to boot.

One producer whose wines remain commendably affordable whilst still transmitting the lofty heights of this hallowed terroir directly onto the palate is superstar Le Gode. Single vineyard Brunello from Montosoli, with great scores and write ups, these are well-worth a look.

What the critics say:

95/100Kerin O'Keefe
94/100Eric Guido, Vinous

"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is a spice box with an array of cedar and clove, giving way to dried strawberries and dusty rose. This is lifted and finessed, displaying fantastic energy. Crunchy red berry fruits cascade throughout, offset by orange hints. The 2019 finishes with dusty tannins while leaving a staining of primary concentration and a cheek-puckering tension. This is bursting with energy yet will require at least three to five years of cellaring to show its best."

94/100James Suckling

"A round and velvety-textured red with berry, dark-chocolate and walnut character. It’s layered and impressive. Chewy yet polished. Needs a few years, but has a bright future. Try after 2025."
