Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Madame De Beaucaillou, 2019
- Red Still
- Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot
Positioned in Saint-Julien, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is renowned for its bold yet refined red wines, epitomising the essence of the Left Bank's terroir.
Ducru have been slowly upping their proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon over the last few years and in a vintage in which Cabernet Sauvignon thrived on the left bank, it is not so hard to understand why the critics have all given some really lovely scores. The consistency of the scores is quite remarkable; always a sign of the true quality and broad appeal of a wine.
The Madame is their super-second, named as a tribute to Madame Eugène Borie, and made from the vines in the Haut-Médoc that the Borie family acquired through her marriage.
Optimal drinking window: Now - 2033
What the critics say:
"Really floral and pretty with currants, cherries and some violets and stones. Medium-bodied with a creamy texture. Attractive tannins and stony undertones. A large percentage of merlot with the cabernet, making it fresh and firm. Sophisticated. Better after 2024."
"A little austerity to the tannins on the opening, followed by a real kick of dark chocolate and tight rosemary spice, touches of orange rind adding freshness and focus to ripe blueberry and cassis fruits. Good quality, delivers plenty of Haut-Médoc signature, and easy to recommend. First year of bottling everything that isn't the Borie St Julien vines into this wine, meaning that it represents 55ha across Moulis, Listrac and Haut-Medoc (from vines in Cussac), vinified at the former Fourcas Borie. 20% new oak."
