The Bordeaux 10 Years On Tasting is always fun to follow. Like Southwold, the world's most respected critics are invited to blind taste the vintage (this time 2014), judging the quality of the liquid in their glass not on the reputation of the chateau, but the wine itself. In this context, the famous St Estephe giantkiller Tronquoy Lalande has once again stolen the show, eclipsing a raft of top Bordeaux for a fraction of the price!
It's safe to say that this has totally transcended the vintage, with a full spectrum of dark red and black fruits, classic Left Bank notes of iodine and lead pencil, the connection to Montrose quite obvious. This is everything we love about good claret.
"Real depth on the nose, which is attractively glossy (for the vintage) with a complex melange of polished but fresh blue, red and black fruits alongside currants, cocoa and resin. Tobacco and sandalwood contribute cigar box aromas, with walnuts, white pepper and pencil shavings also coming in to play, and competing sweet and savoury notes of kirsch, coconut, black truffle and dark soil. The palate is less showy than the nose but supple and bright with soft berry fruits and dark chocolate, bordered by rounded, graceful tannins and shot through with a spicy vein of red grapefruit acidity. Balanced and classy, this really offers everything you might hope to find in a claret double the price."

Having been owned by the multiple 100-point winemaking family of Château Montrose since 2006, this estate in the heart of Saint Estèphe has been on an unbeatable trajectory.
What the critics say:
"The 2014 Tronquoy-Lalande is medium to deep garnet in color. Intense notes of Morello cherries, creme de cassis, and plum preserves spill from the glass, plus touches of mint tea, iron ore, and dried roses. The medium-bodied palate is taut with muscular black fruits and fantastic tension, framed by firm, grainy tannins, finishing long and fragrant. Simply beautiful!"
