Resurrected by life-long Burgundy lover Mark O’Connell in 2011 and our dear friend Pierre Meurgey, Domaine Clos de la Chapelle is headquartered at the Chateau de Bligny, owned by Pierre and no less than Dominique Lafon. The talent behind the new Domaine is considerable, and the wines are already getting rave reviews from the likes of Allen Meadows (Burghound), Neal Martin & Jasper Morris.

We were so impressed by the wines after tasting the 2022s and were surprised to hear that they had little presence in the UK, so it is a real pleasure to offer these wines.

"Smoke on a sea breeze, pure and crystalline, apple skin and honeyed pears, deep and intense, tightly wound currently but packed with mineral weight. Good balance of salinity and ripe fruits, with oak well integrated, mid-weight, nice levels of glycerol and a light tartness, peach bitters on the finish which is deceptively long, as when you think it’s fading another wave of flavour builds on the back palate."

What the critics say:

96/100Sarah Marsh MW, World of Fine Wine

"From 0.75 acres (0.31ha) in En Charlemagne, part of the old Laleur-Piot estate, from mid-slope to the forest line, and southwest to south in exposure. From 2010, biodynamic farming, but certified organic, as they do not conform on all counts. Rémond and Radoux coopers are surprising – Rémond is usually for reds. Good tension, precision, and focus. Straight, well-edged, and mineral. Carries on the finish. Edgy and long. Shivers. Good terroir typicité. 2028–35+."

92-95/100Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"From En Charlemagne, ex Domaine Laleure Piot. A healthy crop, the last picked on 3rd September, with six barrels made, two of them new wood. A powerful incisive white fruit bouquet, with oak showing in the little coconut notes behind. Lemon scented minerals to finish. At this stage a little hard to see into the complete wine, but I think there is plenty here for a long-term future. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. ****"

OUR GROWERS

Domaine Clos de la Chapelle

An exciting new addition to the portfolio, Domaine de Clos de la Chapelle is a fascinating revival of an old Burgundy domaine based around the eponymous, historic Volnay 1er Cru Monopole Clos de la Chapelle. Even trailblazing chemist Louis Pasteur was a huge fan back in the 1800s, placing a regular order for several dozen bottles of Clos de la Chapelle for his personal enjoyment.
