Resurrected by life-long Burgundy lover Mark O’Connell in 2011 and our dear friend Pierre Meurgey, Domaine Clos de la Chapelle is headquartered at the Chateau de Bligny, owned by Pierre and no less than Dominique Lafon. The talent behind the new Domaine is considerable, and the wines are already getting rave reviews from the likes of Allen Meadows (Burghound), Neal Martin & Jasper Morris.

We were so impressed by the wines after tasting the 2022s and were surprised to hear that they had little presence in the UK, so it is a real pleasure to offer these wines.

"An interesting site, sandwiched between Volnay 1er Cru ‘Les Pitures’ and Pommard 1er Cru ‘Les Rugiens (Huat)’, and from 80-year old vines. Initially brooding nose with pomegranate molasses, blueberries, mocha and tapenade as well as a lightly ferrous, nutty jamon iberico note, before strawberry tarts and hints of wet roses, leaf and flower, take over. Smoky cherries and cacoa nibs expand laterally but fine-grained, lightly salted tannins give form and push towards a more linear red citrus and anise finish. An intriguing Pommard, one you want to return to in order to discover its layers."

What the critics say:

92-94/100Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"95+ year old vines, which they use to take cuttings for selection massale. Bright purple. The nose is backward. There is a clean, clear-cut fruit, good acidity, the style shows the hillside location, the intensity shows the age of the vines. A fine backbone. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023. ****"

92-93/100Sarah Marsh MW, World of Fine Wine

"Eighty-year-old vines on a steep limestone slope. Despite being picked on August 29, this is super-ripe, so quite sweet and exotically aromatic. But it retains its keen, linear palate and nervy line. It’s sharply focused and races to a saline finish. 2027–35."

OUR GROWERS

Domaine Clos de la Chapelle

An exciting new addition to the portfolio, Domaine de Clos de la Chapelle is a fascinating revival of an old Burgundy domaine based around the eponymous, historic Volnay 1er Cru Monopole Clos de la Chapelle. Even trailblazing chemist Louis Pasteur was a huge fan back in the 1800s, placing a regular order for several dozen bottles of Clos de la Chapelle for his personal enjoyment.
