The 2019 is one of those harvests the Champagne region talks about in decades to come — a year when maturity, freshness and fruit health arrived simultaneously. Hubert de Billy, fifth generation of the Pol Roger family, calls it "a truly remarkable vintage year". 2019 is the first vintage from new cellar master Damien Cambres for whom, according to Essi Avellan MW, it "is the first truly great August harvest of recent times". Given it is Avellan's highest ever-rated Pol Vintage (94-96 points) - right back to 1880, it seems Cambres is off to a flying start!

The 2019 is built entirely from Premier Cru and Grand Cru grapes, selected from the finest terroirs in the Montagne de Reims, Grande Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs. After six years on the lees it is drinking brilliantly with decadent red fruit, toasted almond, and a backbone of firm acidity that guarantees  another decade of development. Simon Field MW scores it 94–96 points and calls it "most impressive". It is certainly a Pol of tremendous immediacy and one we can heartily recommend getting stuck into, leaving the more restrained, intellectual vintages in the cellar to unfurl.

An incredible wine from one of Champagne's greats, in what is shaping up to be one of the region's standout harvests in a generation. We'd move quickly.
