When visiting Jane Eyre in November, she led us down into the cellar and mentioned she had something rather special to show us... a single barrel of Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2025, sourced from one of the cru’s very finest parcels, now made available exclusively for Honest Grapes Club Members.
2025 is another vintage characterised by low yields, and, as Jasper Morris remarks, "it is going to be a vintage of contrasting styles, but clearly a good one". Jane told us that "the condition of the crop this year is superb, and I’m genuinely excited about the potential".
This is an exceptional Charmes, with all the generosity, structure and authority one would expect from this vintage and site, yet remaining unmistakably a Jane Eyre, with gorgeous perfume, supple, sculpted tannins, and a melange of soft red and black forest fruits.
Some Club Members may remember the barrel of 2019 Charmes we crowdfunded with Jane six years ago, sourced from this exact same parcel. We opened a bottle at a recent dinner with Jane and it has evolved into a truly exceptional wine, which had guests’ jaws firmly on the floor, receiving more than one comparison to Rousseau! The 2025 has the same potential, and again we have just one barrel available to us, but this time, the offer includes not just allocations of a remarkable wine but an invitation to enjoy lunch in Burgundy with Jane herself.
From the upper sector, most prize section of Charmes-Chambertin, adjacent to Le Chambertin itself. East-facing vines on brown rendzina soils with c.40% clay, marl and iron ore. Old vines (1925–1999). Hand-harvested, carefully sorted, fermented with 20% whole bunch, and aged in a mix of one new and seasoned oak.
Broad-shouldered, as one would expect from this terroir, yet unmistakably lifted and incisive. Red cherry, blood orange and wild strawberry lead, edged by ferrous, earthy nuances, a touch of stem-derived pepper, and hints of incense and five spice. The palate is taut and precise, a racehorse held at the gates, driven by freshness and finely grained structure. Poised and authoritative, this is a Charmes-Chambertin of real intensity, with both the terroir and Jane Eyre’s hand coming through clearly.
