  1. Tom and Nathan’s take on Bordeaux 2017: part 1

Take home – it’s time to send us your pre-allocation list, as this year’s releases will be unpredictable. We offer Tom’s selected shortlist of around 40 wines – please let us know if you’d like us to secure cases of anything else that takes your fancy. Continue reading →

  2. Tasting notes on Bordeaux 2017 – a “7 with a difference”

The muted enthusiasm for this vintage is unmerited, says our Wine Director Tom "WineChap"  Harrow for FT How To Spend It. Frosts. Terrible frosts. Worst since 1991. This will be the most that many with a passing interest in wine have heard about Bordeaux’s 2017 vintage so far, and are thus approaching with muted enthusiasm. There has also been an uncharacteristic lack of bombast from the Bordelais preceding last week’s en primeur tastings, surely a further sign that the vintage is not one to get excited about? In reality, tasting the wines supports a different and much more positive conclusion. 3. Burgundy 2016 - what will go into Tom Harrow's cellar?

A number of Honest Grapes clients and club members have asked for my recommendations for Burgundy 2017 and I can give no more honest answer than by responding with what I’m considering getting for myself.  Continue reading →

  4. An Update on 2015 and 2016 En Primeur Campaigns

Every year sees a flurry of future/ En Primeur releases and sometimes it can be hard to keep track of when each one is physically released for delivery (to find out more about buying wines En Primeur please see our blog post with FAQs here). Each region traditionally has its own time of year and then within that region there are always a few producers who like to go at their own pace and release when they feel is the best time for their own wines. 5. An introduction to buying wines En Primeur

What do we mean when we talk about selling wine En Primeur? En Primeur is a system that both merchants and vineyards rely on as a sort of futures market for wines that need time in the cellar. En Primeur (EP) refers to the process of buying wines before they are bottled and released onto the market. Continue reading →

  6. An exquisite evening of Fine Wine tasting

Last night we hosted an impressive tasting of our top fine wines at the wonderful Maison Assouline in Central London. We welcomed over 60 people and presented fine wines from small independent producers that overflow with exceptional value, ranging from intriguingly complex grower Champagnes to monumental Napa Cabernets. 7. Club Pontet-Labrie Update for members on 2015, 2016 and 2017 Vintages

With the 2017 harvest nearly upon us, I was keen to see how all three initial vintages of Pontet-Labrie were coming along. So, on a hot and rather sultry 2nd & 3rd August I visited the vineyard and winery in Saint-Emilion. No flimflam here, I wanted to understand the winemaking and see the wines perform. In summary, the 2015 and 2016 Pontet-Labrie are remarkable, top-notch wines, showing Saint-Emilion plushness and power, but with very different vintage characteristics reminiscent of 2009 and 2010 respectively. I’m confident that the winemakers are striving to produce Pontet-Labrie as ‘the Merlot equivalent of Le Dôme’. The 2017 is still in the vineyard of course, but the auspices are favourable and the spring frost has had little effect on our crop. Continue reading →
