The Mastrojanni Estate is situated in the south-east corner of the Montalcino region, set apart up a dirt road from the village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The wines are traditional and terroir-driven and the winery eschews the use of barriques as one might expect from such traditionalists. Having been purchased by coffee giants Illy, the estate has enjoyed even greater success in recent years and is now rated in the top 10 in the region. The vines are enjoying something of a golden age, reaching their "prime production" according to Monica Larner and revealing hauntingly profound expressions of Sangiovese.

One of Montalcino's great single vineyard crus, the Vigna Loreto is one of our most subscribed wines during Brunello En Primeur, though with plenty of volume for collectors in 2019 we are pleased to be able to offer more than usual! 2019 is a superb vintage for Montalcino with "an embarassment of riches for collectors" according to Vinous' Eric Guido, and unsurprisingly Mastrojanni has knocked it out the park. The Wine Advocate's Monica Larner rates the 2019 very highly indeed with 97 points, up there with the very best wines of the vintage. Don't miss this opportunity to add one of Montalcino's greatest crus to the cellar.

What the critics say:

97/100Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

"Showing cracked white pepper and wet slate, this wine definitely brings you to a clear sense of place. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto is precise and delineated, but as the wine opens, you get interludes of ripe fruit, blackcurrant and oak spice. The wine is faceted with many layers and angles. Bright cherry sits on the palate with good length leading to fine, chalky tannins. You get an authentic taste of Montalcino in this wine. I prefer the Vigna Loreto this year to the more expensive Vigna Schiena d'Asino (from 2018). This is a 9,500-bottle release."
