Imperial Gran Reserva, CVNE, 2017
- Red Still
- Tempranillo, Graciano y Mazuelo
CVNE’s iconic Imperial Gran Reserva was one of 2022's most popular releases and is on tip-top form again in 2017 with a whopping 97 points from James Suckling!
This is his joint-highest red of the vintage, a title it shares with the likes of Yjar and Marques de Murrieta's Dalmau Reserva. Rioja offers some of the very best value drinking reds anywhere in the world.
"Sweet cloves and five spice, soft and enveloping, long and ripe. Everything I want from CVNE, balanced and rich. Pretty youthful, silky textured and bouncy - quaffable now with a good decant and a hearty slab of meat or cellar for a decade to bring out those more savoury notes."
Nathan Hill, Co-Founder & Chairman
Having undergone a rigorous 3 step selection process, first in the vineyards, then the cellar, then finally at blending, this Gran Reserva would be more aptly called a Gran Selection. Only the very best fruit finds its way into each bottle and the consistency of excellence is displayed in every vintage that it is produced. CVNE is often a byword for quality, and the Imperial Gran Reserva is only crafted when conditions are just right, with laser-sharp selection. 2017 was a low-yielding vintage, yet one where CVNE have knocked it out the park.
Drinking window: 2023 - 2035
What the critics say:
"A very structured and gorgeous Rioja with blackberry, cherry, cedar and spice aromas and flavors. Hints of toasted oak underneath. Granite, too. Medium-bodied, yet the structure builds on the palate, giving superb length and power. Give it three to five years to come together, and beyond. Try in 2025."
