Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s most revered estates and this burgeoning family property is very much at the top of its game, producing wines of exceptional quality: scintillating, proper Burgundies, unusually across both reds and whites.

Features as one of the Top 10 Côte de Beaune Red Wine Producers and Top 10 Côte de Beaune White Wine Producers in Tim Atkin's Burgundy 2022 Special Report.

Self-confessed ‘acid freak’ Brian Sieve was especially careful with battonage and lees-stirring of the Chardonnays in 2022, to maintain freshness and verve, noting that it was not a high acid vintage. A little less new oak (not that there is ever more than just enough) and whole bunches in the reds than in the previous solar vintages, plus the gentler acid profile means the wines have a charm and immediacy to rival any vintage we’ve tasted from the domaine.

“De Montille has 0.45ha in the upper part of the village’s best vineyard and the domaine’s expression of this site shows how the stylistic (and qualitive) gap between the top crus of Meursault and Puligny has shrunk. A deep colour for the range and vintage (although only 25% new oak used), with almondine, pear syrup, and apple blossom aromas building in the glass, plus a whiff of salt and masonry. Palate is rich and lateral, with sherbet, Mirabelle, cereal crops and stones, all quite primordial but promises great development.”
Tom Harrow, Head Wine Guru

What the critics say:

92-95/100Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"Fine pale colour. This is more reductive than most in the cellar, at the moment. Some ripe pears behind. A little youthful bitterness, perhaps the reduction, but there is good fruit weight and tension. This may well grow from where it is today. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. ****"

95/100Christy Canterbury MW, Tim Atkin

"Immediately appealing, this top-shelf Meursault Premier Cru delivers unctuousness in a glass. Everything in this wine is a size XL, including the acidity. Toasted waffle, roasted orchard fruits and oodles of pastry spices weave through the palate. This is dense, balanced and blazing for the long-haul."

92-94/100Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2022 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru retains mineralité and tension on the nose with a very slight reduction. The palate is well-balanced with a crisp line of acidity and more mineralité compared to other Perrières I have tasted. Elegant and quite persistent on the finish. Excellent."

OUR GROWERS

Domaine de Montille

Domaine de Montille is now in its ninth generation under the stewardship of sibling duo Étienne & Alix, who have largely remained true to their father’s vision of creating elegant, pure and balanced wines.

In fact Étienne was instrumental in pushing the sustainability of the Domaine by abandoning all chemical fertilisers and herbicides in 1985 and fully transitioning to biodynamic farming in 2005.
