Taras and Amber Ochota make premium single vineyard blends from sites in different parts of South Australia. Fugazi is made from a parcel of old vine Grenache and is named (like most of their cuvées) after an American Punk band. The Ochotas are part of a new wave of Aussie producers that make wines with elegance and balance.
The 2021 Fugazi Vineyard Grenache has a fragrant thread of wild herbs. Fennel seed and charcuterie is underpinned with raspberry, violets and Asiatic spice. The taut, nervous tension of compact red currants and Satsuma plum fills the mid palate with mouth-watering red berry intensity. Finely grained tannins position this svelte, fleshy, and measured weight of forest cherries and persimmon into a long succulent and savoury finish.

"The mineral and grapefruit zest character is very attractive here. White pepper, pomegranate, wild raspberries, wet stones and fresh herbs. Pure and transparent on the linear and streamlined palate, which is full of verve and texture, with firm and chalky tannins. So airy and scented, with pure berry and pomegranate fruit, but also shows gravity with complete structure. Super-drinkable now, but will hold, too."
