Carlo Ferrini works with just six hectares outside of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, one of Montalcino’s most iconic terroirs shared with the likes of Mastrojanni & Podere le Ripi. This part of Montalcino is notoriously warm, so in a (comparatively speaking) cooler vintage like 2018 there is added delicacy and elegance to the otherwise powerful, typical Sangiovese character of the wine.
We are increasingly of the opinion that Montalcino remains the last classic fine wine region to offer real value – and this, one of the best editions from one its greatest winemakers, is a brilliant example that should be in every cellar.
What the critics say:
"This wine was tasted in a preview capacity as it won't hit the market until the beginning of next year. Tasted at the Giodo winery in one of the most remote and beautiful spots in the appellation surrounded by forests and wide open panoramas, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino gives us a promising taste of what we can expect from this warm vintage. The wine delivers ripe, but delicate aromas of cassis and dark cherry with shades of lilac, violet and crushed limestone."
"Black-cherry, violet, lavender and orange-peel aromas follow through to a medium to full body with ultra-fine tannins that run the length of the wine. Such focus and brightness. Agile and weightless at the end. Not the biggest Giodo, but pretty and precise. Drinkable now, but wait for two or three years. Try after 2024."
"The Giodo estate in the south-eastern zone of the DOCG is the dream project of one of Italy’s most celebrated oenologists, Carlo Ferrini . This 2018 Giodo Brunello di Montalcino makes a charming first impression on the nose with sweet tobacco cedar, spice and pepper notes but after two hours the aromas begin to open to rose and ripe, red cherry. On the palate there is a beautiful silky texture and some gentle notes of fine oak that has been subtly integrated with the wine, adding to the spicy, pepper flavors and all encased in beautifully, refined tannins. I have tasted this Brunello at least three times now - twice in Montalcino in November, when the wine was pretty closed but having just tasted it again in February I can say it takes a good two hours for this wine to fully open up but when it does it reveals a beautiful range of aromas and flavors."
