The 2023 vintage reflects a year of moderate warmth with consistent sunshine, leading to steady, well-paced ripening. Although temperatures weren’t extreme, the shift to warmer nights and milder days contributed to extended growing periods. This translated into wines that are strikingly fresh, with lower alcohol levels, vivid acidity, and vibrant character—brighter and more approachable compared to recent years.

Both red and white wines achieved impressive yields, the largest ever recorded for the estate, with terroir expression and balance shining through. For reds, comparisons to the 2017 vintage are apt, showcasing elegance and precision. Whites carry their hallmark freshness and minerality, further underscored by the decision to reduce the percentage of new oak due to the larger volumes produced.

"100% whole bunch vinification. Dense purple with a ruby rim. The bouquet has an intensity of dark but fresh raspberry fruit, in a different register of intensity. As always with Rugiens-Bas, the fruit develops a depth not seen elsewhere in Pommard. Perfectly integrated tannins, enough acidity, a very complete wine with excellent length. Tasted Oct 2024 ****"

"The 2023 Rugiens-Bas is a newly reinvigorated wine, with a marvellous concentration of mulberry and pomegranate fruit with hints of liquorice, pepper, lavender and earth. The texture is dense and structured but never astringent or hard. The grapes are from 1ha of vines next to those of the Hospices; two-thirds are more than fifty years old; a second parcel was replanted ten years ago. The grapes from the former parcel are fermented as whole clusters, and the balance is destemmed. This vintage is the second to include the younger vines."

Domaine de Montille

Domaine de Montille is now in its ninth generation under the stewardship of sibling duo Étienne & Alix, who have largely remained true to their father’s vision of creating elegant, pure and balanced wines.

In fact Étienne was instrumental in pushing the sustainability of the Domaine by abandoning all chemical fertilisers and herbicides in 1985 and fully transitioning to biodynamic farming in 2005.
