One of the joys of the 2020 vintage was exploring the white Burgundies from producers not on our books, and one domaine that stood out from the rest was Saumaize-Michelin.
These wines really are something else! Unsurprisingly we're not the only ones enchanted by this small domaine in the Mâconnais... Neal Martin, Allen Meadows and William Kelley are all worshipping at the altar of Saumaize-Michelin, and it's time we all joined them!
"Tasting the range I was shocked by how well they stood up to the Cote d'Or, outshining even the odd Puligny 1er Cru! I was most reminded of Chassagne, and whilst Allen Meadows (who rates these very highly, with potential scores up to 92 for the non 1er crus) hasn't reviewed the Cote d'Or 2020 whites yet, these are scores that fall between village and 1er Cru 2019s for some of the village's best domaines, including Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey..."

"The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Pontacrine comes from fossil-rich limestone soils, the vines oriented west, matured in 600-liter barrels. This has quite a seductive bouquet, touches of menthol and fennel merging with citrus fruit, becoming spicier with aeration. The palate is very well balanced, quite saline in the mouth with veins of stem ginger furnishing the persistent finish. Vibrant and engaging in style, this Pouilly-Fuissé comes recommended. "
"The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé “Pentacrine” is generous and charming, exhibiting aromas of citrus oil, crisp stone fruit, white flowers and buttery pastry, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping palate. From holdings at the bottom of the Roche de Vergisson, it's named for the star-shaped fossils that characterize this site (as they do the Jura's Étoile)."
