The 2021 Vosne-Romanée from Domaine Jacques Cacheux is a real treat for Pinot Noir lovers who appreciate elegance with depth. It’s medium-bodied but with enough concentration to feel substantial - juicy red fruit, soft berry compote and a touch of darker fruit mingle alongside gently firm tannins and a slice of minerality.

Always on the lookout for growers under the radar, especially those with interesting parcels in Vosne-Romanée, and we were very impressed with Jacques Cacheux’ 2021 vintage. Patrice Cacheax, Jacques’ son, has run the domaine since 1994 helped by his son Charles.

As an aside Charles’ sister Marianne is one half of the dynamic duo Pierre and Marianne Duroché and we can’t help thinking some of their successful maison wines might have fruit sourced from Cacheaux’ holdings...

Right now the 2021 is in an engaging early phase — the fruit is vivid and the tannins are firm but not aggressive. Over the next two to three years, expect the primary cherry and raspberry fruit to begin integrating with the wine's stony, mineral backbone, and for some secondary complexity — dried herbs, forest floor, a touch of sous bois — to start emerging. By 2028 to 2031 it should be hitting its stride, with the tannins fully resolved and the palate offering both generosity and depth. It's not a wine built for the very long term, but well-stored bottles should drink well until around 2033 before the fruit starts to fade.

Tasting Notes

AppearanceBright, translucent ruby with a fine garnet rim — classic cool-vintage Burgundy.

NoseRed cherry, crushed raspberry, and a whisper of dried rose petal open things up with real freshness. Underneath, there's a cool, stony quality — almost like wet slate after rain — and a faint suggestion of forest floor beginning to emerge. It's precise rather than perfumed, and all the better for it.

PalateMedium-bodied with a lovely tension between the juicy red fruit and the firm, fine-grained tannins. Soft berry compote gives generosity without weight, and a darker, plummy note adds depth in the mid-palate. The acidity is bright and focused, carrying the fruit cleanly through.

FinishMineral and persistent, with the tannins resolving cleanly and a faint iron-tinged note lingering pleasantly.

Overall impressionA genuinely elegant Vosne-Romanée that rewards those prepared to give it a little more time in bottle.

Food Pairings

In Burgundy, a village Vosne like this would sit happily alongside coq au vin made with local Gevrey rather than the wine itself, where the braised chicken soaks up a sauce rich with lardons and mushrooms. Poulet de Bresse roasted simply with thyme and butter is the local benchmark pairing, and it works precisely because neither the food nor the wine tries to dominate. A slice of Époisses, if you can time it at the right stage of ripeness, is a fine Burgundian tradition. Roasted pigeon or wood pigeon with lentils would also be a natural match here, picking up on the wine's darker fruit and earthy undertone.

FAQs

What does this wine taste like?

Juicy red cherry, soft berry, and a whisper of darker fruit underpin the palate, with fine-grained tannins and a mineral, stony quality on the finish. It's medium-bodied and precise rather than rich and opulent — elegant Burgundy at a village level.

When is the best time to drink this?

It's enjoyable now with a short decant, but we think it will be at its best from around 2028 to 2032, once the tannins have fully resolved and some secondary complexity has started to develop. Patience of even a couple of years will be rewarded.

What food should I serve with it?

Roast chicken with thyme and butter is the Burgundian classic here. Pigeon, duck breast, mushroom risotto, or a plate of charcuterie with a decent Comté would all be very happy companions. If you're feeling indulgent, ripe Époisses alongside is a Burgundy tradition worth observing.

Who is Domaine Jacques Cacheux?

A small, family-run domaine in Vosne-Romanée that has been quietly producing serious Burgundy under the radar for decades. Patrice Cacheux has run the estate since 1994, now joined by his son Charles. The family connection to Pierre and Marianne Duroché adds an interesting footnote to what is already a compelling address.

Is this worth cellaring?

Yes, though it's not a wine that demands it. If you have the patience, two to four more years in a cool cellar will bring real rewards. If you're opening it tonight, give it half an hour in a decanter first.

How should I serve it?

Slightly cooler than room temperature — around 15-16°C. A short decant of 20-30 minutes is worthwhile. Use a large-bowled Burgundy glass to give the aromas space to develop.
