About Honest Grapes

Honest Grapes

Everything there is to know about us

Well, there we were: a mix of wine enthusiasts, wine professionals, and friends bemoaning how difficult it is to find a website which offers a wide selection of great value, quality wines, at reasonable prices. And when we say reasonable prices, we all meant something fair and equitable – not the usual inflated mark ups, false discounts and BOGOFs that are so prevalent in retail these days.

We also wanted a website that had a community feel with fun social tasting events; a back-to-basics, no nonsense, exciting approach to such a glorious product.

The discussion continued through supporting independent growers, small wineries, producers who consider the wine’s character and value more than volume and branding, not to mention the hardworking agents and small importers who work tirelessly to bring such wines to a wider audience. It moved on to different wine varieties and styles, from the mid-week thirst-quenchers to the once-a-year treats.

We toured France, Italy, Spain and Portugal, picked up a few friends in Germany, Austria and Greece before heading to the New World to find wines from South Africa, the Americas and Antipodes. Returning home, we picked up some of the best homegrown wines from the UK.

Passions flared as favourites were promoted and tales were told. Then some bright spark said “Put your money where your mouth is”.

So, we did. And the result is, Honest Grapes - the quality wine marketplace. We’re pretty proud to be a part of it; we rather hope you will be too.

Meet the Team

What makes the Honest Bunch?

Tom Harrow

Tom is our WineChap. With fifteen years in the business, writing, buying, selling and hosting great events, he is a jack of all (wine) trades and trying to master a few of them. Tom has tried a large spectrum of excellent wines from all over the world and is delighted to have lined up so many of them here for you to enjoy.

Favourite food and wine combo

His legendary 6-meat, truffled lasagne with an old Barolo.

Nathan Hill

Our Chairman's a prolific angel investor who has advised, started and invested in many a company. He’s passionate about wine, WSET qualified and runs wine tastings for business, friends and charity as well as travelling the world in search of the perfect wine. He’s far happier with a well priced decent quality wine than anything too fancy. As a scientist, he brings structure and rigour to our company processes. Yessir!

Favourite food and wine combo

Roast leg of lamb and a lovely Pinot Noir from Burgundy, Oregon or New Zealand sets Nathan aquiver! For easy drinking, a pleasantly saline Picpoul de Pinet with some canapes will do, thanks.

Paul Wigger

Paul Wigger

Having spent 15 years calculating the profitability of beers and spirits, Paul is now learning about the finer things such as being the CFO of Honest Grapes. 6ft 8 but annoyingly bad at all sports, he's happiest watching them played properly, especially the pleasure and pain of being a Luton Town season ticket holder... when the two little ‘uns and even smaller dog allow.

Favourite food and wine combo

Christmas dinner with a nice smooth red.

Malcolm Hunt

Malcolm Hunt

Malcolm is new to the wine trade but with rather more years experience in accounting and finance than he would like to admit, he keeps the company and the team up to date and aware of the less interesting financial side of life. Outside of finance he is our resident Divemaster, and also a keen rugby fan constantly dragging people along to matches.

Favourite food and wine combo

At the risk of sounding like Rumpole of the Bailey, a big roast dinner with all the trimmings accompanied by a nice but good value claret.

James Matthias

James Matthias

After having gained a degree in Biology, James naturally took a job in the wine trade over a decade ago, spending the majority of which at one of the UK's largest merchants. In the intervening years he has held various sales and leadership roles, whilst also completing a WSET Diploma in 2016. He finds true pleasure in helping clients build their perfect cellar, unearthing new opportunities - and of course, enjoying the odd bottle of wine along the way.

Favourite food and wine combo

Whilst James' true passion will always be for Burgundy, is there a better match than a cote de boeuf and a mature Cote Rotie?!

Charlie Goblet d’Alviella

With the surname including Goblet, Charlie was destined to be in the wine business! Gaining his WSET Diploma in 2005 he joined us with a varied wine background from running a wine shop to selling to super yachts in the Med. He is our Grand Crew Club Manager and loves nothing better than discussing and sharing his knowledge of all things wine with our members alongside helping host our tastings. He may well deviate to discuss all things food as he is also a passionate chef so be warned, you may need to keep on track if you just want to discuss wines!

Favourite food and wine combo

Homemade pizza with chorizo, roasted artichoke and roasted peppers cooked in the woodfired oven served with a judiciously aged Brunello... or... 8hr slow cooked lamb shoulder with sweet potatoe dauphinoise and a Cornas from the 1990’s just amazing!

Luke Gavin

Luke is the ‘go to’ chap for all of our Premier Crew members. As membership manager and wine advisor, he’s always happy to answer your wine-related queries and make sure you don’t miss out on any of our tasting events. Luke is keen to help find the ideal vinous accompaniment to any occasion and also relishes the challenge of finding something new when inspiration is needed.

Favourite food and wine combo

Having gained much of his wine experience from the ground up in both Australia and New Zealand, Luke likes nothing more than firing up the BBQ and pairing whatever’s seasonal with the perfect bottle.. currently enjoying lightly charred spatchcock chicken with some decent Rully.

Nick Daniell

In the wine trade for almost 20yrs, Nick has been around the block honing his skills and learning from the best to now source the finest new wines for Honest Grapes. Being able to bring wine together with his other passion of travelling means there is never a holiday without a quick trip to a winery!

Favourite food and wine combo

Can’t go too far wrong with a plate of Lobster Linguini and a rich Chardonnay (Burgundy or Italian ideally)

Sophia Cavadias

Never without a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye, Sophia is at the heart of our logistics and ops team. She spends most of her time making sure our warehouse is ship-shape and your lovely wines always arrive with you on time!

Favourite food and wine combo

A rich, juicy Amarone served with her yiayia's moussaka

Dyland Van Dyk

Dylan comes from Sunny South Africa where he studied at Stellenbosch university. After having completed a number of wine harvests and spent 6 years in the wine industry he is now one of our go-to wine gurus.

Favourite food and wine combo

A good traditional braai with a well matured Châteauneuf du Pape.

Alexis Fuller

Alexis has marketed her way through various sectors, and even ran her own dog day-care business, before completing her WSET Level 3 and moving into wine in 2016. It's Alexis' job to look after our customers and club members and we pride ourselves on providing excellent customer service, alongside our delicious wines.

Favourite food and wine combo

Alexis likes nothing more than a cheese board accompanied by anything from Northern Rhône.

Ashley Moss

Ashley Moss

Coming from the shores of Sydney with a background as a musician Ash had always wanted to further his knowledge of wines and try some of the many exciting variations Europe and Italy in particular has to offer. With his background in Shipping and Logistics and desire to learn more about all types of wines he has joined the real experts at Honest Grapes!

Favourite food and wine combo

A Rigatoni Alla Siciliana with extra parmigiano and a nice Valpolicella Ripasso...yummm.

Theresa Harrow

Theresa is our web development coordinator that makes sure the site looks lovely and sumptuous. You’ll also sometimes see her at our events snapping away: So remember. Smile! You’re on camera.

Favourite food and wine combo

Theresa is Swedish, so usually it’s some weird drink that’s been concocted in the family’s backyard. When it comes to wine, she gets all civilised and loves nothing better than a crisp Sancerre with shellfish galore.

Red Stevens

Red has a way with words. In fact Red's got away with words, coming on board as our Content Guru to make sure our website and messaging always reflects our quirky tone of voice and values. Joining the wine trade was just the excuse Red needed to keep exploring his love of wine.

Favourite food and wine combo

Recent discoveries include Barbacarlo and Alsace Riesling, but he's always happy with rib-eye and an old Bordeaux.

Radheka Kumari

Radheka is a Sales and Marketing Assistant at Honest Grapes, here to support our team with all our orders and products online. She's fresh into to the world of wine but the role gives her the perfect vantage point to learn all the ins and outs, which she's doing a lot of with the expert knowledge of our team.

Favourite food and wine combo

Radheka is half Indian and after being born in New Zealand, grew up in Bombay. She feels very loyal to a cold Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc which is just delicious as a cool counterpart to spicy black pepper and garlic butter Indian king crabs.

Jess Zamora

Fresh out of her degree in Accounting and Finance, Jess is our Accounts Assistant. She keeps our numbers in order and the accounts up to date.

Favourite food and wine combo

During the day Jess means business, but after hours you'll find her relaxing with her favourite glass of riesling paired with mussels in a white wine sauce.

Emily Saunders

Emily is our Marketing Data Analyst, helping keep all our data in shipshape and making sense of the numbers. With a background in Merchandising and new to the wine industry, she is eager to learn more about the wines behind the data.

Favourite food and wine combo

Sunday Roast with a glass (or bottle!) of Cab Sauvignon

Jill Mitchell

Born and raised in California, Jill completed her degree in Creative Writing in the UK before spending a few years traveling. She fell in love with wine when she lived in Greece and decided to take up her WSET education upon returning to London where she worked in wine shops and wine clubs. Now at Honest Grapes she gets to combine her passions for wine and writing, working on our content and assisting with events.

Favourite food and wine combo

A chilled glass of Assyrtiko with anything from the sea, preferably drunk on a beach somewhere. Her new favourite discovery is Lambrusco di Sorbara with a BBQ pork Vietnamese Bun Thit Nuong – try it!
