Cooked dairy notes with superb layers of fruit and a blue-cheese character that adds both salinity and sweetness. Absolutely transcendent. Perhaps just a shade lower in acidity than you might like for very long-term ageing.

These south-facing, steeply elevated vines that are over forty years old sit in the most clay-rich parts of this famous vineyard, and were the last of the domaine’s parcels to be harvested (on 16th September), all of which ensures a balance of richness, texture and mineral depth. Herbal and serious, with a note of bitter almond and pear skin on the nose, the palate follows up with crunchy, green apple acidity, which lifts and propels the palate to a long, toothsome finish.
Always a super reliable, benchmark domaine, and well-priced, Clos Frantin’s 2017s continue a good run of form. We were also really impressed by a number of the Maison’s wines this year which have closed the gap with it’s flagship domaine whilst offering tremendous value. As Neal martin comments, Bichot can make “really quite delicious, complex wines that often surprise people in blind tastings when not swayed by the label.” We feel our selections, from village wines to the most senior Grand Crus, all show the precision, typicity and expressive, vibrant, phenolically mature fruit that make a case or two essential purchases for all Burgundy lovers.
