Crafted in collaboration with renowned Burgundian winemaker Jean-Marc Roulot, the Mainqué Chardonnay from Bodega Chacra offers a harmonious blend of Old World elegance and New World energy. The unique position of the vineyards, nestled right in the middle of the desert and cultivation only possible thanks to the nearby Rio Negro river, means they can flood irrigate up to three times per year, preventing the dreaded Phylloxera and other pests, which also allows them to cut down on chemicals so that organic viticulture is practised here. Where pests struggle, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the other hand thrive, producing wines of exquisite quality in the right hands.

Mainqué is the name of a small town in the Río Negro province of Patagonia, Argentina, where Bodega Chacra is located. In Mapuche, Mainqué is often interpreted to mean "condor," referencing the majestic bird that soars over the Andes and is a powerful symbol in South American indigenous culture.

What the critics say:

96/100James Suckling

"The saltiness in this chardonnay is so impressive, with aromas of sliced apples, honey, crushed stones and honeysuckle. Medium-bodied, crunchy, vivid and flavorful, with hints of peaches and grape skin. Drink now or hold."

OUR GROWERS

Bodega Chacra

Bodega Chacra was founded in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, of Sassicaia fame, in the remote Río Negro Valley of Patagonia. He was drawn by ancient, ungrafted Pinot Noir vines planted in the 1930s and has since farmed them biodynamically, with Hans-Peter Bründlmayer and later Burgundy's Jean-Marc Roulot among his collaborators. The estate's philosophy is rooted in minimal intervention, absolute respect for the vineyard, and a conviction that Patagonia's extreme conditions produce wines of uncommon precision.

Bodega Chacra farms biodynamically and has held Demeter biodynamic certification across its estate vineyards. The winery works without synthetic pesticides or herbicides, uses natural preparations in the vineyard, and follows the biodynamic calendar for all farming and winemaking decisions.
