Château Branaire-Ducru has delivered something extraordinary with their 2020. This Saint-Julien fourth growth has crafted a wine that even seasoned critics are calling unlike anything they've tasted from the estate before. The blend showcases the château's ability to harness the intensity of this remarkable vintage while maintaining the elegance that defines great Saint-Julien.
We find ourselves with a wine of tremendous depth and dimension, built around inky dark fruit, chocolate, and new leather that builds to what can only be described as an explosive finish.
What the critics say:
"The 2020 Branaire-Ducru is utterly magnificent. A wine of extraordinary depth and dimension, the 2020 possesses tremendous intensity right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, licorice, cloves and lavender build as into the explosive, palate-staining finish. I don't think I have ever tasted a Branaire quite like this."
"Sleek and seductive, quite highly charged with such a potent perfume and black bramble fruit aroma on both the nose and palate. Silky, smooth, suave and confident, this is a supremely gorgeous wine. Not weighty as such, but there is intensity in the layers of fruit and acidity with a cool, refreshing core underpinned by salty stones and liquorice elements. Elegant and refined, pulsing with energy, charm, delicacy and detail."
The vineyard sits on the classic Günz gravel terraces of Saint-Julien, with deep deposits of stones and pebbles over clay and limestone subsoil. This freely draining soil provides excellent water regulation whilst the stones reflect heat back onto the grapes, promoting optimal ripening. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures and extends the growing season. These conditions create wines with the structure to age yet retain the elegance that defines Saint-Julien.
Saint-Julien sits at the heart of the Médoc's gravelly plateau, renowned for producing Bordeaux's most harmonious reds. The appellation covers just 910 hectares but punches well above its weight, home to five classified growths including Ducru-Beaucaillou and Léoville Las Cases. Unlike neighbouring Pauillac's power or Margaux's perfume, Saint-Julien strikes a perfect balance between structure and finesse. The commune's wines age gracefully for decades whilst remaining approachable in their youth.
The 2020 Bordeaux vintage began with one of the wettest winters on record, followed by a scorching summer that nearly broke temperature records across the region. What could have been a disaster became salvation: those deep winter water reserves carried the vines through the heat, while the dry conditions from July onwards concentrated flavours beautifully. The harvest started early and moved quickly, with most châteaux picking under ideal September skies.
We find 2020 Bordeaux surprisingly charming for such a hot year - the wines show ripe, generous fruit without the baked character you might expect. The Merlot-based Right Bank wines are particularly successful, displaying plush damson and blackberry flavours with enough freshness to keep them lively. Cabernet Sauvignon on the Left Bank delivers power and concentration, though some properties struggled more than others with the heat. Most 2020s are drinking beautifully now - this isn't a vintage that demands decades of patience, and we rather like that about it.
