Grand-Puy-Lacoste sits amongst Pauillac's finest, producing wines that capture everything we love about Left Bank Bordeaux without the hysteria of the first growths. The Borie family has guided this fifth growth since 1978, crafting wines that are serious but not stern, structured but never austere.
Since 2020, Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste has released a small number of exquisitely presented large-format cases each year, featuring four bottles, two magnums and a double magnum — an impressive total of 900cl. Striking and rare, these cases make a truly memorable gift and a wonderful way to mark an outstanding Bordeaux vintage, appealing equally to collectors and devoted wine lovers.
The vineyard sits on Pauillac's famous deep Günzian gravel beds, the same geological formation that underpins Latour and Mouton. These well-draining soils force the vines to send roots deep in search of water, concentrating flavours while the gravel's heat retention ensures perfect ripening even in cooler vintages. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperature extremes, while the gravel's mineral content imparts the graphite character that defines great Pauillac. Clay subsoils provide just enough water retention to sustain the vines through summer drought.
Pauillac represents Bordeaux at its most powerful and age-worthy, home to three of the five First Growths and a clutch of exceptional estates like Grand-Puy-Lacoste. The appellation's deep gravel soils and temperate maritime climate create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, which typically dominates the blends here with its cassis intensity and cedar complexity. Unlike neighbouring Saint-Estèphe with its cooler, more austere character, or Saint-Julien's silky elegance, Pauillac wines combine power with finesse in a way that defines Left Bank greatness. The appellation's 1,200 hectares produce wines that demand patience but reward it with decades of evolution.
The 2025 Bordeaux vintage emerged from one of the most demanding growing seasons in recent memory — the earliest budbreak since 1989, June temperatures second only to 2003 since records began, and an unusually early harvest beginning in August for the whites. Conditions that should have produced heavy, overripe wines. They didn't. Decanter's Georgie Hindle, who tasted close to 200 wines ahead of the formal campaign, describes "exceptional concentration, aromatic purity and a freshness that contradicts the record-breaking heat.
The early critical consensus places 2025 stylistically between the precision of 2020 and the structure of 2016, with the brightness of 2023 — a combination that suggests a very serious vintage indeed. Yields are dramatically low, the smallest crop since 1991, with production across the Gironde running around 15% below the five-year average. The quality is here. There simply isn't very much of it.
