Corton is Burgundy's only red Grand Cru sitting outside the Côte de Nuits, which gives it a slightly different character to Gevrey or Chambolle — broader-shouldered, more mineral, with a grip that takes time to soften into something genuinely magnificent. In magnum format, everything slows down, which is exactly the point.
The 3-litre format here means this wine will age more gracefully and for longer than its standard-bottle equivalent, making it a serious proposition for anyone with a cellar and a little patience.
Corton Grand Cru spans three villages — Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix-Sérizey, and Pernand-Vergelesses — on a broad, south-to-east-facing hillside. The soils are predominantly limestone and marl with significant iron-rich red clay, which gives Corton reds their characteristic earthiness and grip that separates them from the more perfumed styles of the Côte de Nuits. Altitude varies across the hill, with the best red wine plots sitting on the mid-slope where drainage is optimal and the vines work hard. That iron in the soil is not incidental — it's the backbone you taste.
Corton Grand Cru is the only red Grand Cru in the Côte de Beaune and covers a patchwork of named climat sites, the most famous being Le Corton, Clos du Roi, and Les Bressandes. Unlike the tight, commune-focused Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits, Corton's sprawling hillside means quality can vary significantly depending on which climat the wine comes from. At its best it offers a more muscular, earthy style than Chambolle or Vosne, with real minerality and structure that demands time. It has historically been undervalued relative to its northern neighbours, which makes serious examples genuinely interesting to seek out.
