Rangen de Thann represents Gewürztraminer at its most profound and mineral-driven. Grown on the volcanic slopes of Alsace's southernmost Grand Cru, this is Olivier Humbrecht's masterpiece from one of France's most extreme vineyard sites. The combination of dark volcanic soils and steep south-facing exposure creates wines of extraordinary concentration and longevity.
This 2024 vintage captures everything that makes Rangen legendary: the perfume and spice that define Gewürztraminer, married to a mineral backbone that only these volcanic soils can provide.
What the critics say:
"The 2024 Gewurztraminer Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru, from plots lower down on the slope, shimmers shyly on the nose, surrounding ripe pear with just a flutter of rose petals. The palate is beautifully clean cut, adding exquisite blood orange zest and ripeness to the white peach notions on the palate, making for a seductive, scented core. Creaminess comes in, too, sinking deeper and deeper into orange zest. The fact that this has 10.9 grams per liter of residual sugar means that the fruit notions are boosted without obvious sweetness. The balance this strikes is simply marvellous. (Dry) "
Rangen de Thann sits on steep volcanic slopes with dark sedimentary rocks and volcanic debris, unique in Alsace. The south-facing exposition and 15-45% gradient create intense heat retention, whilst the volcanic soils impart distinctive mineral character. At 340-450 metres elevation, the site combines power with elegance, producing Gewürztraminer of extraordinary concentration and longevity that sets it apart from any other Alsace Grand Cru.
Rangen de Thann is Alsace's most southerly Grand Cru and arguably its most distinctive, covering just 18.8 hectares of volcanic terrain. The appellation permits only Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, with strict yield limits ensuring concentration. Unlike other Alsace Grand Crus grown on limestone or granite, Rangen's volcanic soils create wines of unique mineral intensity that age magnificently for decades.
The 2024 vintage in Alsace delivered exactly what vignerons hoped for after a string of challenging years. Spring arrived gently without late frosts, summer brought enough warmth to ripen everything properly, and crucially, September stayed dry when it mattered most. We find ourselves with one of those vintages that reminds you why Alsace sits where it does, tucked against the Vosges mountains with just enough protection to let the grapes ripen slowly and completely.
What landed in the cellars shows remarkable purity and balance across the board. The Rieslings have that crystalline precision we love, with acidity that cuts like a laser but never shouts about it. Gewürztraminer managed to be expressive without turning into perfume, while Pinot Gris struck that perfect middle ground between richness and freshness that makes you reach for another glass. These wines are drinking beautifully now if you fancy them young and bright, but the best will reward patience until 2030 and beyond.
