Zind-Humbrecht's Grand Cru from Rangen de Thann represents Alsace Pinot Gris at its most profound. The 2024 vintage captures the essence of this storied vineyard's volcanic soils, where Olivier Humbrecht's biodynamic approach allows the terroir to speak with startling clarity.
This wine sits in that magical space where power meets precision. The Rangen's steep south-facing slopes and dark volcanic stone create wines of uncommon intensity, yet the mineral backbone keeps everything in perfect balance. This wants a few years to integrate fully, but the rewards for patience will be extraordinary.
What the critics say:
"The 2024 Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru results from tiny yields of 12 hi/ha. It comes with the merest hint of reduction. The palate, however, expands into complete juiciness that features tart red apple, lemon, grapefruit and pale peach, all framed with a gorgeous, benign bitterness that makes the mouth water. This is beautifully pearl-like in its surface and shape, smooth, supple, luminous and unimpeded. Simply gorgeous. (Bone-dry)"
Rangen de Thann is Alsace's southernmost Grand Cru, a steep amphitheatre of volcanic soils unlike anywhere else in the region. The dark volcanic stone absorbs heat during the day and radiates it back at night, creating a unique microclimate. These ancient volcanic soils, combined with the steep south-facing exposition, produce wines of extraordinary power and mineral complexity. The vineyard's proximity to the Vosges mountains provides protection whilst the volcanic terroir imparts an unmistakable smoky minerality.
Alsace Grand Cru Rangen de Thann represents one of the region's most distinctive terroirs, officially recognised in 1983. Unlike most Alsace vineyards planted on limestone or granite, Rangen sits entirely on volcanic soils from an ancient geological fault. The appellation permits only four grape varieties, with Pinot Gris and Riesling producing the most compelling results. Rangen wines are known for their power, longevity, and distinctive mineral character that sets them apart from their Grand Cru neighbours.
The 2024 vintage in Alsace delivered exactly what vignerons hoped for after a string of challenging years. Spring arrived gently without late frosts, summer brought enough warmth to ripen everything properly, and crucially, September stayed dry when it mattered most. We find ourselves with one of those vintages that reminds you why Alsace sits where it does, tucked against the Vosges mountains with just enough protection to let the grapes ripen slowly and completely.
What landed in the cellars shows remarkable purity and balance across the board. The Rieslings have that crystalline precision we love, with acidity that cuts like a laser but never shouts about it. Gewürztraminer managed to be expressive without turning into perfume, while Pinot Gris struck that perfect middle ground between richness and freshness that makes you reach for another glass. These wines are drinking beautifully now if you fancy them young and bright, but the best will reward patience until 2030 and beyond.
