Domaine Zind-Humbrecht's Clos Windsbuhl is Gewurztraminer at its most captivating. This single-vineyard expression from one of Alsace's legendary biodynamic estates captures everything we love about this polarising grape: the exotic perfume, the spiced intensity, the sheer unapologetic drama.
From a steep, south-facing limestone slope in Turckheim, this 2024 shows the focused precision that only comes from old vines and meticulous farming. The limestone backbone keeps all that Gewurztraminer exuberance in check, creating a wine that's rich without being cloying. Ready now but will develop beautifully until 2034, showing how great Alsace whites age with grace.
What the critics say:
"The 2024 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl combines orange flower, rose water and smokiness on the nose. The palate is a perfect picture of pink grapefruit zest with all its spicy, tangy aromatics and vivid peach. Aromatically, this is seduction itself: tangy, taut, bright and yet so yielding, so melting, so smooth. An utterly sensuous but bone-dry Gewurztraminer that has all the allure of a perfectly aromatic pink grapefruit. (Bone-dry)"
Clos Windsbuhl sits on steep, south-facing slopes of Muschelkalk limestone at 300 metres elevation in Turckheim. The limestone provides excellent drainage while retaining just enough moisture for the vines, and the mineral-rich soils add structure to Gewurztraminer's naturally exuberant character. The enclosed vineyard benefits from a warm microclimate while the limestone subsoil keeps the wines fresh and focused, preventing the heaviness that can plague lesser Gewurztraminers.
Alsace Gewurztraminer represents one of the region's four noble grapes, allowed in Grand Cru vineyards and capable of serious age-worthiness. Unlike many wine regions, Alsace focuses on varietal character rather than place names, though single vineyards like Windsbuhl showcase how terroir shapes even the most distinctive grapes. The appellation allows both dry and off-dry styles, with the best producers like Zind-Humbrecht crafting wines that balance Gewurztraminer's natural richness with mineral precision.
The 2024 vintage in Alsace delivered exactly what vignerons hoped for after a string of challenging years. Spring arrived gently without late frosts, summer brought enough warmth to ripen everything properly, and crucially, September stayed dry when it mattered most. We find ourselves with one of those vintages that reminds you why Alsace sits where it does, tucked against the Vosges mountains with just enough protection to let the grapes ripen slowly and completely.
What landed in the cellars shows remarkable purity and balance across the board. The Rieslings have that crystalline precision we love, with acidity that cuts like a laser but never shouts about it. Gewürztraminer managed to be expressive without turning into perfume, while Pinot Gris struck that perfect middle ground between richness and freshness that makes you reach for another glass. These wines are drinking beautifully now if you fancy them young and bright, but the best will reward patience until 2030 and beyond.
