The Grande Cuvée is the result of a project now spanning over 150 years, and this Édition alone has taken 20 years to build.
Edition 174 is the latest chapter in a wine that was never meant to carry a single vintage's story, but dozens of them at once: this blend draws on over 170 individual wines from 11 different years, the youngest from 2018, reaching back as far as the 1990s via the house's reserve wines. The result is a Champagne built not on freshness alone but on memory, layering, and sheer patience.
What the critics say:
"The NV Grande Cuvée 174ème Édition, the latest release from Krug, is based on the 2018 vintage. Dense and explosive in the glass, the 174ème Édition possesses tremendous textural depth right out of the gate. Baked apple tart, chamomile, dried flowers and tangerine peel literally stain the palate. The purity of the fruit is exquisite. The 174ème Édition can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, but it will drink well for many decades to come. Today, it is positively stunning. The 174ème is a blend of 143 lots going back to 2001."
Krug draws fruit from across Champagne's full patchwork of terroirs, pulling together Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier from villages in the Montagne de Reims, the Côte des Blancs, the Vallée de la Marne, and beyond. Chalky subsoils provide drainage and that chalky, mineral backbone, while the diversity of sites, some cooler, some riper, gives the blenders an enormous palette of flavours and structures to work from. It is this breadth, rather than any single vineyard, that defines the wine's character.
Champagne AOC permits only Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, grown within a strictly delimited region north-east of Paris, with secondary fermentation in bottle mandatory under the traditional method. Krug works within these rules but pushes them further than most, fermenting individual parcels separately in oak rather than blending early, and holding reserve wines back for years. Grande Cuvée itself carries no vintage statement, instead using an Edition number to track precisely which blend of years went into each release.
