The 2023 vintage reflects a year of moderate warmth with consistent sunshine, leading to steady, well-paced ripening. Although temperatures weren’t extreme, the shift to warmer nights and milder days contributed to extended growing periods. This translated into wines that are strikingly fresh, with lower alcohol levels, vivid acidity, and vibrant character—brighter and more approachable compared to recent years.
"From south-facing, gravelly soils rich in red clay and iron, this wine showcases 80-year-old vines. Bright red fruit and sweet cedar box notes on the nose lead to a palate of crunchy raspberries and fine structure. With 50% whole cluster and 20% new oak, this wine is both approachable and structured, with early drinking appeal."
Our note
Both red and white wines achieved impressive yields, the largest ever recorded for the estate, with terroir expression and balance shining through. For reds, comparisons to the 2017 vintage are apt, showcasing elegance and precision. Whites carry their hallmark freshness and minerality, further underscored by the decision to reduce the percentage of new oak due to the larger volumes produced.

What the critics say:
"Aromas of lovely pomegranate fruit dominate the initial attack of de Montille's village-level Pommard Les Cras. The structure is tannic, but not overly so, and the density makes the tannins feel silky and approachable. The grapes are from 0.5ha below Rugiens, where there is some iron in the fairly deep soil over a limestone base, south of the village. One-third is fermented as whole clusters, and the wine is ageing now in cask (10% new)."
"The 2023 Pommard Les Cras has a perfumed bouquet with rose petal scents infusing the light red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, pretty red cherry fruit and a delicate and precise finish - just a lovely and endearing Pommard without airs or graces."
