From one of the Douro’s most majestic estates, Quinta do Vesuvio 2000 is a vintage Port of real presence and poise.
The 2000 vintage at Quinta do Vesuvio was one of small yields but exceptional quality. Poor weather during flowering drastically reduced the crop, yet the remaining fruit ripened perfectly through a warm, steady summer. With yields as low as 720g per vine, concentration was superb—Touriga Nacional reached an ideal 13.4º Baumé—and the mild harvest conditions allowed gentle, even fermentations in the estate’s traditional granite lagares. The result: a powerful, beautifully balanced Vesuvio, rich in fruit and elegance.
Perched high in the Douro Superior, Vesuvio is a legendary estate with a long reputation for handcrafted Ports - foot-trodden in granite lagares, just as they always have been. Now part of the Symington family’s stable, it remains one of the few houses where tradition truly defines the style. The 2000 vintage shows Vesuvio at its best: generous, structured, and effortlessly noble.
What the critics say:
"Intense concentrated chocolate, black cherry, liquorice and damson nose. Complex, full intense fruit palate, with firm grippy tannins, good body, and a persistent finish with spices and pepper. (Gold, 2009)"
"Saturated ruby-purple. Superripe, primal arornas of black raspberry, maple syrup and dark chocolate; very sweet but also highly aromatic. Lush, chewy, very sweet and rich, with outstanding depth of black fruit and spice flavor. Hugely rich and ripe but not over the top. Serious, ripe tannins are currently covered by baby fat, making this very broad, thick, slightly spirity wine deceptively approachable now."
