The other Ribera del Duero estate owned by Vega Sicilia perfectly demonstrates the more modern, New World style also found in the DO. Very much a powerhouse in its own right, this is not a second wine. More forward and gourmand than its brother and with only 12 months of ageing prior to bottling, it is released much sooner too.

“… if I was asked to hold up a bottle of what modern Ribera del Duero should taste like and what is should aspire to, the Alion would be the one in my hand… World class
Neal Martin

What the critics say:

95/100Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

"The obsession in 2019 was to avoid excess ripeness and to keep the freshness, so they did a softer vinification, used larger vats for the élevage and used less American wood. The 2019 Valbuena was produced with a blend of Tinto Fino with 3% Merlot. It has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.88 and 4.6 grams of acidity. I love the nose; it is perfumed and subtle. And the wine is beautifully textured; the tannins are very fine, silky even, quite different from the tannins from the other 2019s from the group that I tasted next to this, Macán and Pintia. A triumph over the conditions of the year, it's a more elegant Valbuena than I anticipated."

95/100James Suckling

"Ripe, tarry plums and black cherries with violets, rocks, coffee and graphite. Refined notes of balsamic fruit and cocoa powder, too. Full-bodied and juicy with an iron fist of tannins, yet at the same time so velvety and polished. Very long, focused finish, showing lots of finesse and layers. Drinkable now, but better after 2025."

OUR GROWERS

Vega Sicilia

Vega Sicilia is unquestionably Spain's most iconic producer. The domaine is a whopping 700 meters above sea level in the shallow part of the Duero River Valley. The Unique climate of cold nights and hot days allows grapes to become perfectly ripe and develop a wonderful tannic structure, with a delightful backbone of acidity and therefore superb balance.
