Before 1950, engineer Alberto ‘Tito’ Zuccardi moved from northwest Argentina where his Italian grandparents had settled, to Mendoza. There, he began experimenting with innovative irrigation systems. In 1963, he planted a vineyard in the Maipú region, initially to demonstrate his irrigation system to neighbouring farmers - unaware that this would spark a lifelong passion.
Today, Bodega Zuccardi Valle de Uco is led by Sebastián Zuccardi, who follows in the footsteps of his grandfather Alberto and his father José. Sebastián’s goal is to craft wines of exceptional purity, deeply connected to the terroirs of the Uco Valley, nestled in the shadow of the Andes Mountains. The family is dedicated to producing wines that capture the essence of their soils and the extreme climate of the vineyards, bringing the heart of the land into every glass.
"I no longer seek for the perfect wine, but for a wine that expresses its origin”
Sebastián Zuccardi
What the critics say:
"The 2021 Finca Canal Uco leads with a wonderfully pure, deep core of black and purple fruits with savory, tar-like accents and lifted herbal, underbrush-tinged top notes. The palate is generous and lush yet balanced with an alluring, deft gracefulness that straddles burly, bramble-laden fruits with deep concentration and no excess weight. The finish is charred and smoke-driven, marrying strident, persistent and gently chewy tannins with focused, energetic acidity and cascading length. A beautiful combination of ripe fruits, burly structure and poise, this could use a year or two in the cellar to further integrate its tannin structure, but I suspect it will be fascinating to keep track of over the following decade."
"Blackberry, blueberry, bark, earth and dark mushroom aromas. Some spices and mountain herbs. Touches of cement. Medium-bodied with a real depth of fruit. Density and power at the end. It takes you deep in the center palate. Tannins are well assimilated and polished. No wood. Made in cement. Give it three to four years to open and come together."
