Henri Giraud Champagne, a true gem that has captured the hearts of those who have had the pleasure of experiencing its unparalleled excellence and they have definitely captured all of our hearts here at Honest Grapes! While often dubbed as "the greatest Champagne you've never heard of" by Robert Parker, our Wine Director Tom has been singing the praises of these exceptional wines, particularly the standout cuvée, Fût de Chêne. We are thrilled to introduce you to these extraordinary and truly unique offerings.
Nestled in the heart of Champagne, with 20 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards gracing the enchanting landscapes of Äy, Henri Giraud is a name that commands attention. Their vineyards, characterised by their low acidity, are predominantly planted with Pinot Noir, representing three-quarters of their cultivated vines. A significant portion of these vineyards, about 10 hectares, basks in the south-facing sun, adding to the allure of their exceptional terroir.
The Wine
The artistry of Henri Giraud wines extends beyond the vineyards to the cellar, where the magic of winemaking unfolds. Many of their wines, including their cherished top cuvées, undergo fermentation and aging in Argonne oak.
The younger vineyards, which boast an average age of nearly 40 years, are rooted in over 200 meters of chalk, their vines gently caressed by a dusting of topsoil. Under the guidance of Claude Giraud and his team, the vineyards are nurtured through a practice of minimal interventionist viticulture.
Giraud's Champagnes are unapologetically broad and expressive yet possess a profound soul and vinous eloquence that sets them apart. Every sip reflects their commitment to craftsmanship and a genuine expression of terroir. In a manner reminiscent of a young Gerard Depardieu embodying Cyrano de Bergerac, these Champagnes exude both boldness and elegance.
With a commitment to quality and an unwavering pursuit of excellence, Henri Giraud produces only around 250,000 bottles annually, firmly establishing itself in the boutique realm of Champagne houses. It is this dedication to creating a limited number of truly exceptional bottles that has earned Henri Giraud its status as a hidden gem in the world of Champagne.
