Akrathos, Xinomavro, 2018

With five hectares of organic vineyards at between 200-550 metres on Mount Cholomon in Halkidiki, Northern Greece - near the birthplace of Aristotle’s historic wine “Akanthos” - Babis Bekris of Akrathos is on to a good thing.

The shallow, sandy loam soil and the slate subsoil ensure low yields and concentrated juice, the mild daytime temperatures and cool nights, along with winds from the surrounding mountains and sea breezes from the nearby bays, create the perfect environment for growing exceptional grapes.

The 2018 Xinomavro is a medium to full-bodied red that will benefit from a 30 minute decanter before serving. Enjoy it with a variety of rich dishes, including slow-cooked lamb, grilled meats, beef stews, roasted game, and Mediterranean dishes with tomato-based sauces. It also complements hard cheeses and charcuterie.
