The second wine of Grand-Puy-Lacoste, and in 2016 it shows just how good a 'second' can be. The palate is supple and generous, brimming with ripe cassis, dark cherry, and hints of tobacco, all framed by polished tannins and a fine freshness that carries through to the finish.
Grand-Puy-Lacoste is one of Pauillac’s great classed growths, a Fifth Growth that routinely overdelivers. The estate has been in the Borie family since the 1970s, who have invested heavily in both vineyard and cellar to produce wines of precision, balance, and classic Médoc character. Lacoste-Borie is crafted with the same care as the grand vin, offering an earlier-drinking expression of this hallowed terroir.
What the critics say:
"The 2nd wine of Grand Puy Lacoste in a brilliant vintage like 2016 is always worth looking out for. This doesn't disappoint, with its pllp black frits and its Pauillac pencil lead and slate character. 45% new oak, 50hl/h yield."
"This is a beautifully fresh wine with lovely, juicy black cassis flavours. The day-night temperature changes of up to 20 degrees centigrade made a huge difference to the quality of the tannins, and GPL has some of the steepest slopes and best draining soils in Pauillac to cope with the wet early season (although this also meant some blockage of young vines during the drought). Overall they have produced a plush, easy drinking wine that offers great pleasure. 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with a yield of 50hl/ha."
