Clos Rougeard is the closest thing the Loire has to a cult domaine. The Foucault brothers, and now the Bouygues family, who acquired the estate in 2017, have long proved that Cabernet Franc from Saumur Champigny can age like great Burgundy. This 2020 magnum comes from a warm, generous vintage that ripened the fruit beautifully without tipping into heaviness, and the extra volume of a magnum gives the wine even more headroom to develop.
Sourced from a south-facing slope with sandy, limestone-rich soils, Poyeux has always been the more graceful sibling in the Rougeard family - silky, perfumed, and hauntingly elegant, with incredible purity of fruit and that signature mineral undertow.

"The 2020 Les Poyeux elegantly fills the mouth like an arch. lt's not a big wine despite the warmth of the year, nor is it warm. This is serious and not overdone. It's supple, ripe and gentle with some savory earthiness joining the cedary, tobacco-like oak. A few rains before harvest have ensured that it didn't become too concentrated. The 2020 is rounded and ripe, and its tannins offer the finest of grains. This is gentle, satisfying and balanced."
The Poyeux vineyard sits on a plateau above the village of Chacé, with soils dominated by tuffeau — the pale, soft limestone that runs beneath much of the western Loire and gives these wines their distinctive chalky mineral edge. The subsoil retains moisture through dry summers while the free-draining surface keeps the vines in productive stress. The continental influence of the wider Loire Valley moderates what can be a cool and marginal climate for red grapes, and in warm years like 2020, the site reaches a ripeness rarely seen this far north.
Saumur Champigny is the Loire's most serious red wine appellation, carved out of the broader Saumur zone and dedicated entirely to Cabernet Franc. It sits on the right bank of the river Thouet near its confluence with the Loire, and the underlying tuffeau limestone is what distinguishes it from neighbouring Anjou reds. The appellation produces wines that range from simple fruit-forward reds for early drinking to age-worthy, structured examples like those from Clos Rougeard that sit comfortably alongside the better Chinons to the east.
The 2020 Loire growing season was shaped by warmth and drought, with the vines under significant heat stress across the summer — part of a broader pattern of hot, dry years that have redefined what Loire wines look and taste like. A mild spring accelerated development, and while some rain arrived at useful moments, yields were generally down. Growers who managed the canopy well and didn't panic-harvest came out ahead. Mildew pressure was lower than in some recent vintages, which helped quality where yields were already constrained.
The result is a vintage of real ripeness and concentration — sometimes unusually so for a region we associate with nerve and tension. Muscadet surprised many, producing wines with more flesh than usual without losing their saline edge. Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé delivered vivid, full-throttle Sauvignon that some love and others find a touch broad. Chinon and Bourgueil are among the standouts: the Cabernet Franc absorbed the warmth well, producing wines with genuine depth and structure. Most whites are drinking well now; the better reds will reward patience until 2026 or beyond.
