Continuum is the Mondavi family's unfinished argument with greatness; Tim Mondavi and his sister Marcia left the family business after the sale of Robert Mondavi Winery and channelled everything into this single estate on Pritchard Hill, one of Napa's most sought-after hillside addresses.
The Proprietary Red is a Bordeaux-inspired blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, grown entirely on their estate vines at elevation and made without compromise.

"A look at the base blend of Continuum's 2023 Proprietary Red suggests that great things are to come. Right now, the proportions are 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, but that could still change a bit prior to bottling next year. Cherries and berries swirl together easily on the nose, joined by hints of violets and sage, while the medium to full-bodied palate is intensely concentrated yet not heavy, exhibiting fantastic length and richness on the finish."
"Looking at the 2023 Proprietary Red Wine, it shows the purity and finesse of the vintage with an almost Lafite-like sense of finesse and elegance. Based on 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot and aged 22 months in 56% new French oak with 43% neutral French oak and 1% concrete amphora, it offers cassis, freshly sharpened pencils, graphite, and savory tobacco and floral nuances. It's medium to full-bodied on the palate, has a flawlessly balanced mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. It brings just a hint of that classic mountain-like terroir in its concentration, yet the purity, finesse, and sheer class are truly exceptional. Give it 4-6 years, and this will keep for 30 years or more. Drink 2029-2054."
Pritchard Hill sits at elevations between 400 and 730 metres on the eastern slopes of Napa Valley, with thin, rocky volcanic soils over basalt that stress the vines and concentrate flavours dramatically. The altitude brings cooler nights and longer hang times than the valley floor, preserving acidity and keeping alcohol in check relative to the wine's sheer fruit intensity. These hillside conditions produce naturally small berries with thick skins, which translates directly into the wine's deep colour and firm tannic structure.
Napa Valley AVA is California's most celebrated wine region, covering roughly 57,000 acres of vineyards across a narrow valley north of San Francisco Bay. The appellation encompasses enormous diversity — from the valley floor's rich alluvial soils to the volcanic hillsides of Pritchard Hill and Howell Mountain — and the rules allow blending across that geography under the single Napa Valley designation. Compared to the more prescriptive appellations of Bordeaux, Napa operates with considerable freedom: no mandated varieties, no yield restrictions of consequence, and producers may blend as they see fit. That freedom, in Continuum's hands, is used to make something that looks unmistakably to the left bank of Bordeaux for inspiration.
After the drought years that dominated much of the early 2020s, 2023 brought Napa something it had almost forgotten: a genuinely wet winter. Atmospheric rivers dumped substantial rainfall across California through the early months, replenishing reservoirs and pushing water tables up in ways the valley hadn't seen for years. The growing season that followed was cooler and more drawn out than recent vintages, with harvest arriving later than many growers had become accustomed to. That extra hang time matters — it tends to produce phenolic ripeness without the sugar accumulation that forces winemakers into picking decisions they'd rather not make.
The result across Napa is a vintage that feels more detailed and less obviously plush than the blockbuster heat years. Cabernet Sauvignon shows real structure — tannins that have something to say — alongside fruit that doesn't overwhelm the conversation. These are wines built for the medium to long term. The best examples from Oakville, Rutherford, and Stags Leap will reward patience; give the serious reds until at least 2028, and the top names considerably longer. If you're reaching for bottles now, give them air and time in the glass.
