The Côte de Nuits-Villages appellation covers villages at the northern edge (Fixin and Brochon) and southern tip (Corgoloin, Comblanchien, and Prémeaux-Prissey) of the Côte de Nuits. Soils here are typically Jurassic limestone and marl, with varying proportions of clay that tend to give the wines a little more body and earthiness than the gossamer-light grands crus to the north. The altitude and easterly exposure help retain acidity, keeping the wines fresh even in warmer vintages.
Côte de Nuits-Villages is a communal-level AOC covering five villages on the fringes of the Côte de Nuits, between Marsannay in the north and Nuits-Saint-Georges in the south. Production is dominated by red Pinot Noir, though a small amount of white is permitted. It sits a rung below Nuits-Saint-Georges and the village appellations in the hierarchy, which makes it one of the few remaining entry points into serious Côte de Nuits Pinot at a price that does not require a mortgage. Think of it as Burgundy's honest working clothes rather than its Sunday best.
