Côte de Nuits-Villages sits quietly at the northern and southern bookends of the Côte de Nuits, the appellation that produces Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée but asks for none of their prices. Jane Eyre is a small domaine making wines that punch well above their postcode, and this 2024 — in magnum, no less — is a lovely example of what the village level can do in the right hands: Pinot Noir with real grip and transparency, fragrant and precise rather than heavy.
The 2024 vintage in Burgundy was demanding in the vineyard but rewarding in the glass, producing wines of real freshness and clarity. In magnum the evolution will be slower, the fruit more persistent, and the overall arc more satisfying.
The Côte de Nuits-Villages vineyards sit on the fringes of the main Côte, typically on limestone and marl soils with a northeast or east-facing aspect, which moderates ripening and preserves the natural acidity that defines good Burgundy. The cooler margins of the appellation help produce Pinot Noir with energy and definition rather than weight. At its best the soils give a stony, mineral edge that distinguishes these wines from softer, more southerly village reds.
Côte de Nuits-Villages is a village-level AOC covering vineyards at the northern tip (around Fixin and Brochon) and southern tip (Corgoloin and Comblanchien) of the Côte de Nuits. It sits above Bourgogne AOC in the hierarchy but below the named village appellations like Gevrey or Nuits-Saint-Georges. Red wines must be made from Pinot Noir; the whites, rarely seen, are Chardonnay. The appellation offers some of the best value entry points into serious Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir, particularly from growers who farm carefully and don't over-extract.
