Jane Eyre is one of Burgundy's more intriguing newer names — producing Gevrey-Chambertin with a precision and restraint that suits the appellation's serious reputation rather than chasing easy charm. This is the village-level cuvée, and it carries all the hallmarks of the Côte de Nuits at its most compelling: that distinctive mix of red fruit, iron, and something almost floral that makes Gevrey so hard to pin down and so easy to love.
In magnum, the wine has more time to evolve and more room to breathe — a smart format for a wine that rewards patience.
Gevrey-Chambertin sits on the Côte de Nuits, where the vineyards run along a narrow band of Jurassic limestone and marl beneath a thin topsoil of reddish-brown clay. At village level, the soils are generally deeper and more clay-rich than the grands crus above, giving wines more flesh and a slightly rounder texture, while the bedrock still delivers that characteristic mineral backbone. The Côte faces east, catching the morning sun and protected from afternoon heat by the ridge above — producing wines with freshness and structure in equal measure.
Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest commune appellation on the Côte de Nuits and home to nine grands crus, including Chambertin itself — the vineyard Napoleon allegedly refused to be without. At village level, the appellation rules require 100% Pinot Noir and relatively modest yields, though the best growers routinely go further. The appellation has a justified reputation for producing the most muscular and age-worthy village Burgundy, with more tannin and darker fruit than neighbours like Chambolle-Musigny, though the finest examples also carry a distinctive violet-tinged perfume that softens things considerably.
