Optimal drinking window: 2026 - 2030
Glenelly's Estate Reserve Chardonnay comes from one of Stellenbosch's most picturesque properties, where French winemaking tradition meets South African sunshine. This is Chardonnay with serious intent: carefully handled fruit from mountain slopes, judicious oak treatment, and the kind of balance that makes you remember why this grape conquered the world.
The 2022 vintage shows beautiful integration of ripe stone fruit with fresh citrus, wrapped in a creamy texture that speaks to quality French oak and skilled lees work.
The 2022 is currently showing primary stone fruit character with well-integrated oak, making it approachable and generous now. Over the next 2-3 years, we expect the fruit and oak to marry more completely, with secondary notes of honey, nuts, and brioche beginning to emerge. The wine should reach its peak around 2028-2029, when the mineral backbone will become more prominent while maintaining freshness. After 2030, the wine will likely begin a gentle decline, though quality Stellenbosch Chardonnay can surprise with its longevity.
What the critics say:
"The 2022 Chardonnay Reserve comes from the estate. It is whole-bunch-pressed and aged in 20% new oak for 11 months, including one 5,100-liter foudre. Just 18% goes through malo. It has a perfumed bouquet with yellow fruit, brioche and saffron, opening nicely with aeration. The palate is fresh and taut with lively acidity, lime and orange pith intermixed with light lemon rind note towards the finish. The partial malo works to its advantage, imparting decent tension and gaining length on the finish. Worth seeking out. "
"A warmer vintage and a more typical example of the Glenelly Chardonnay than the 2023, it shows a judicious balance between elevage in wood (10-11 months in 500L barrels, 20% new) and ripe, tropical-leaning fruit. The result is a fuller and more complex wine than the 2023, with cedar, toast and shortbread from the barrels interlaced with banana, nectarine and orange zest, plus a little more freshness and lift on the palate too. Despite its modest alcohol, this is quite an impactful wine with attractively integrated barrel maturation."
Tasting Notes
AppearanceBright golden yellow with green highlights.
NoseRipe peach and nectarine mingle with citrus zest and subtle vanilla from oak ageing. We find hints of toasted almonds and a touch of honeysuckle that speaks to the wine's South African origins. There's a lovely mineral thread running underneath the fruit.
PalateFull-bodied yet fresh, with stone fruit flavours balanced by bright acidity. The oak is well-integrated, adding texture rather than dominating the fruit, while careful lees stirring has created a creamy, almost buttery mouthfeel. Citrus notes provide lift and energy through the mid-palate.
FinishLong and satisfying with lingering stone fruit and a touch of spice.
Overall impressionA serious Chardonnay that balances richness with restraint.
Food Pairings
In the Western Cape, this style of Chardonnay would traditionally accompany the region's exceptional seafood, particularly line-caught yellowtail or kingklip prepared simply with lemon and herbs. The wine's richness makes it perfect for Cape Malay curry dishes, especially mild fish or chicken curries with coconut and aromatic spices. Locals might also pair it with roasted springbok or ostrich, while the wine's texture complements traditional bobotie, the spiced mince dish that's become synonymous with South African cuisine.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve at 10-12°C, which allows the wine's complexity to unfold gradually as it warms in the glass. No need to decant, but opening 30 minutes before serving will help it express its full aromatic potential. Use a generous Burgundy bowl to concentrate the aromatics while providing enough surface area for the wine to breathe. This is a wine that rewards patience in the glass.
The Glenelly vineyards sit at 200-400 metres elevation on the south-facing slopes of the Simonsberg mountain, benefiting from cooling maritime breezes from False Bay. The soils are predominantly decomposed granite with clay subsoils, providing excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for the vines. This combination of altitude, aspect, and soil creates ideal conditions for Chardonnay, allowing slow ripening while maintaining natural acidity.
Stellenbosch is South Africa's most prestigious wine region, established in 1679 and centred around the university town of the same name. The region benefits from diverse microclimates created by mountain slopes and valleys, with cooling Atlantic influences moderating the Mediterranean climate. Stellenbosch is particularly renowned for its red wines, but elevated sites like Glenelly's prove equally capable of producing world-class Chardonnay with both power and elegance.
The 2022 vintage in Stellenbosch arrived with the kind of unpredictability that keeps winemakers on their toes. A wet winter provided excellent soil moisture reserves, but spring brought variable conditions that extended flowering and set up uneven ripening later on. The defining challenge came during harvest when persistent rain interrupted picking schedules, forcing producers to be ruthlessly selective about when and what they brought into the cellar.
What emerged is a vintage of surprising freshness and precision, particularly from those who waited out the weather. The Cabernet Sauvignon shows lovely balance rather than the power-first approach of recent hot years, with genuine structure beneath the fruit. Chenin Blanc absolutely shone, developing beautiful texture while keeping its natural acidity intact. We're finding these wines drink beautifully now, offering immediate pleasure while having the backbone to develop gracefully over the next five to eight years.
