Established in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin and his wife, Guigone de Salins, the Domaine des Hospices de Beaune has grown over centuries through generous donations, resulting in a diverse collection of vineyards. Notably, 85% of these vineyards are classified as Premier or Grand Cru. Each year, on the third Sunday of November, the Hospices de Beaune hosts a prestigious wine auction, a tradition since 1859. Proceeds from this event support the Hospices Civils de Beaune, funding hospital projects and charitable initiatives.
The 'Cuvée Arthur Girard' was established in 1936, following Arthur Girard's bequest of his Savigny-lès-Beaune vineyards to the Hôtel-Dieu. The cuvée is produced from the Les Bas Marconnets and Les Peuillets Premier Cru vineyards.
What the critics say:
"Medium deep purple in colour, the nose is quite reticent but the fruit really fills out the palate, with medium tannins behind. The style goes back to a purer fresher style of red fruit than in the recent hotter vintages. There is a fine point of clean acidity to finish."
