Les Astéries is named after the limestone found in and around St Émilion and the vineyard is miniscule, even by St Émilion standards – just 1.2ha! With 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the vines are over 80 years of age, meaning their roots often travel tens of metres down into the dense bedrock in search of water and it helps explain why the vines remained so healthy during the high heat of the vintage.
From benchmark St Émilion Grand Cru Château Teyssier to icons Pontet Labrie and Le Dôme, Jonathan Maltus (with help of head winemaker Neil Whyte) has one of the most formidable ranges in Bordeaux and beyond, yet the wines always bear the Maltus stamp: his trademark “cashmere” tannins wrapped around a core rich, succulent fruit.
The 2022 Les Astéries was produced exclusively for Honest Grapes, under the supervision of Rabbi Padwa of KLBD.
What the critics say:
"It is lovely to see this back in production after the ravages of frost in 2021 (and perhaps 2020 too), even if there is still no Le Carré. I love this. It’s a little more refined and elegant than it used to be and is less marked by the new oak than I recall. It is very pure, precise and linear, with the astéries calcaire tannins crafting and sculpting this wine so beautifully – it’s almost like imaging Michelangelo getting to work on a tablet of limestone. There’s wonderful pixilation and mid-palate detail and the fruit – a mix of crushed and fresh raspberries – is captured as if in hyperreality. Wonderfully and radiantly fresh and fabulously juicy on the finish. A vin de garde of course and with considerable tannins – but that is the signature of astéries calcaire!"
"The first time this cuvée has been bottled all kosher, the 2022 Les Astéries is an 80/20 split of Merlot and Cabernet Franc that comes from more hard-packed limestone soils. It has a pure, pretty bouquet of ripe blue fruits as well as some floral and mineral nuances. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, focused, straight, nicely structured Saint-Emilion with ripe tannins and outstanding length."
