Le Gode, Brunello di Montalcino, 2018
Le Gode, Brunello di Montalcino, 2018
- Red Still
- Sangiovese
Owned and run by the Ripaccioli family for 56 years, this rising star practices classic Montalcino traditionalism with a minimalist approach to winemaking. They produce quintessential Brunello on a small scale in the north on Montosoli hill, which is known for its high altitude and silt clay and marl soil dotted with limestone and gravel. The production from this area is synonymous with sumptuously smooth and elegant wines, delicate minerality, longevity and striking aromatics.
Though no official classification system is in place, Montosoli is regarded as a Grand Cru area of Montalcino. Le Gode’s minimal intervention methodology contributes to the pure expression of Sangiovese from this iconic terroir and delivers a resulting freshness that lends structure and finesse. Their Brunello di Montalcinos are aged in Slavonian oak for three years and then six months in French oak before spending up to 8 months in bottle. The Ripaccioli family recommends a glass of this before any important decision, a recommendation we take very seriously!
Drinking window: 2024 - 2040
What the critics say:
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is earthy and darkly floral in the glass, wafting up with a whiff of flowery underbrush giving way to crushed rocks and black currants. This is elegant and weighty on the palate, with masses of ripe wild berry fruits underscored by saline-minerals, as a core of brisk acidity adds inner harmony. Blue- and purple-toned florals linger on and on, as hints of licorice fade, all engulfed by a silty staining of tannins. The 2018 from Le Gode possesses unexpected depth for the vintage, along with a balanced structure."
"The 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino retains its rustic side, though it has ripe red fruit, with red berries, cherry, leather, and sage. Medium to full-bodied, it has a lot to love, with mineral salty earth, well-balanced between its light wild side and sweet ripeness. It doesn’t feel lean or rough and is a lovely wine. Drink 2024-2040."
