Optimal drinking window: Now - 2028
Parés Baltà have been farming their Penedès estate organically for years, and the Indígena Garnatxa is one of their most characterful expressions: a pure, unadorned Garnacha that wears its Catalan roots proudly. The name says it all: indigenous, local, unapologetically itself. It's made to be drunk with pleasure and without ceremony, capturing the kind of bright, herb-flecked red-fruit energy that Garnacha does so well when it's not pushed too hard.
We find it vivid and slightly wild, with dried thyme and crushed raspberry giving way to a palate that's light on its feet but not thin. The tannins have a pleasing, almost granular texture, and the finish stays fresh. Drink it slightly cool.
The 2022 is already drinking well and will continue to do so for another couple of years. The primary fruit — that bright raspberry and strawberry — is at its most vivid right now, and this wine is not built for transformation in the cellar. By 2027 or 2028 the fruit will start to fade and the herbal notes will dominate in a less harmonious way. Drink it while it still has that lively, almost electric energy; this is not a wine that rewards patience so much as presence.
Tasting Notes
AppearancePale, luminous ruby with a violet tinge at the rim — light enough to see your hand through the glass.
NoseBright wild strawberry and raspberry lead, with a distinctive backdrop of dried thyme, lavender, and a whisper of white pepper. There's a freshness here that immediately signals restraint in the winery — no oak, no heavy extraction, just the fruit and the herbs.
PalateLight to medium-bodied with a juicy, almost crunchy attack and lively acidity that keeps everything moving. The tannins are fine-grained and present without being grippy, and there's a faint garrigue quality that pulls the whole thing toward the savoury side. Precise rather than plush.
FinishClean and herb-flecked, with a persistent pepperiness that lingers pleasantly.
Overall impressionA genuinely characterful everyday Garnacha that rewards being taken just slightly less seriously than it probably deserves.
Food Pairings
In Catalonia, a wine like this would be poured almost automatically alongside escalivada — smoky roasted aubergine and red peppers dressed with olive oil — where the herbal lift in the wine mirrors the char on the vegetables. It's also a natural partner for botifarra sausages grilled over vine cuttings, a weekend ritual across the region. Locally cured charcuterie, pan con tomate, and the mild funk of aged Garrotxa cheese would all be entirely at home here.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve this at around 14-15°C — slightly cooler than you might a bigger red, which brings out the wine's freshness and makes the fruit pop. No need to decant; just open and pour. A medium-sized Burgundy-style glass works well, giving the lighter aromatic character room to develop without being overwhelmed by too much air.
The Garnacha vineyards at Parés Baltà sit in the Penedès at mid-altitude, where Mediterranean warmth is tempered by Atlantic breezes from the coast. Soils are a mix of limestone and clay, giving the wine both its freshness and that characteristic mineral grip. The combination of warm days and cool nights during the growing season helps retain the lively acidity that makes this wine so digestible.
Penedès DO sits between Barcelona and Tarragona, and is probably best known internationally for Cava production, but the still wine scene here is increasingly compelling. The DO permits a wide range of varieties, both international and local, and has become a testing ground for producers interested in native grapes like Garnatxa, Xarel·lo, and Sumoll. It lacks the prestige cachet of Priorat or Ribera del Duero, but that's rather the point — these are wines made for drinking, not investment.
Catalonia's 2022 vintage delivered one of those seasons that kept growers on their toes from start to finish. The year began promisingly enough, but summer brought intense heat and drought that tested even the most experienced hands in regions like Penedès and Priorat. Harvest came early across the board, with many producers picking weeks ahead of their usual schedule to preserve freshness and avoid the relentless August sun.
What emerged from the cellars shows remarkable concentration and power, though the best producers managed to retain the brightness that makes Catalonian wines so food-friendly. The indigenous varieties particularly shone: Garnacha from the higher altitude sites in Montsant shows beautiful spice and mineral backbone, while Tempranillo-based blends from Penedès have that lovely tension between ripe fruit and savoury depth. We're finding most of the reds are drinking beautifully now, offering immediate pleasure while having the structure to reward a few more years in the cellar.
FAQs
What does this wine taste like?
It's a light, fresh Garnacha with wild strawberry, dried herbs, and a touch of white pepper. It's more precise and savoury than plush — think crushed red fruit and garrigue rather than jammy richness.
When should I drink it?
Now, and over the next year or two. The 2022 is in a lovely spot right now and doesn't need any more time. Drink it while the fruit is still vivid.
What food does it pair well with?
Brilliant with simply grilled meat, charcuterie, roasted vegetables, or anything with a Mediterranean herbal quality. Escalivada, grilled botifarra, and aged sheep's cheese are all ideal. It's also honest enough to handle a good pizza.
How should I serve it?
Slightly cooler than room temperature — around 14-15°C. No need to decant. A standard medium-sized red wine glass does the job well.
Is this worth cellaring?
Not really. It's made for pleasure now, not for the long haul. Put it in the fridge for 20 minutes and open it tonight.
What makes this wine different from other Garnachas?
The emphasis on freshness and restraint sets it apart from bigger, more extracted Spanish Garnachas. Parés Baltà farm organically and biodynamically, and that shows in the energy and precision of the wine — it tastes like somewhere specific, not just a grape variety.
