Often nicknamed “Baby Grange,” Bin 389 earns its title partly because portions of the wine are aged in barrels that previously held Grange. First crafted in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, it’s the wine that cemented Penfolds’ reputation among red wine lovers, blending the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the plush richness of Shiraz. Balancing vibrant fruit with well-judged oak, Bin 389 showcases that generous, signature mid-palate that has become a Penfolds hallmark.

Penfolds is one of Australia’s most iconic wineries, with a history stretching back to 1844 when Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold planted their first vines in Magill, South Australia. From those modest beginnings, it has grown into a global benchmark for quality, best known for producing rich, age-worthy reds.

What the critics say:

96/100James Suckling

"This wine has been made every vintage since 1960. Refined, generous and polished aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, cured meat, crushed stones and iodine. The palate is full-bodied with a rounded, textural palate and ultra-refined tannins that lead to a silky, savory, black-fruited finish. 51% cabernet sauvignon and 49% shiraz. Excellent. Drink or hold."

95/100Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

"The 2023 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz is inky, complete, powerful and structured, with black berries, sweet licorice, star anise and fennel. There are also notes of roasted meat juices and cedar wood. The expression of this wine is very attractive—the prism of the cooler season works well in this wine. The fruit is sourced from McLaren Vale, Padthaway and Barossa Valley, matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads, 33% new."
