A long-standing favourite with Club Members, the sample bottle sent to Honest Grapes HQ didn't last long. It's another distinctive Tuscan Merlot to add to the arsenal, with a host of Syndicate benefits for Club Members taking shares, of which just 10 are available.
Each share secures a tenth of a barrel, a case of 30 bottles equivalent, personalised with your name (or message of choice). There is no surcharge on Magnums, and larger formats are available at a small premium. Every share includes an invitation to an exclusive event in London with the wines, with details to follow.
Given how popular Galatrona has been with Club Members in the past, we expect strong demand. Contact us, or secure a case online.
What the critics say:
"This is beautifully lithe, polished and pure in texture with, as ever, the most gracious of tannins. Here, from a slightly cooler vintage, this seems if anything even more refined and elegant. Cedar, cedar and more cedar. Lilac. Lily of the valley. Violet, with aeration. So much grace and charm, so much elegance and finesse. Delicate and super-svelte texturally. Radiantly pure. Powdery tannins on the finish indicate the delicacy of the extraction and the long-term aging potential. Texturally sublime and aromatically very beautiful."
"The 2024 Galatrona (100% Merlot) is a seriously beautiful, vivid wine. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, mint and espresso are all laced together in the glass.Just bottled, the 2024 is very expressive. I can't remember a Galatrona with this much class. Harvest took place from September 2 to 9. The 2024 spent 18 months in French oak, 30% new. This is so refined."
"A racy, refined red, showing blackberry, black-truffle and violet aromas and flavors. Hints of fresh herbs like bay leaves and basil. Medium-bodied with crunchy fruit and firm tannins that turn creamy in the polished, textured finish. Lead pencil and sandalwood. Very impressive for the vintage. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable but try in two or three years."
The Galatrona vineyard sits at around 300 metres above sea level on clay-rich soils with a high proportion of alberese — the same compressed schist and limestone mix that defines some of Chianti's finest plots. The elevation keeps temperatures relatively cool at night, preserving the natural acidity that stops Merlot tipping into flabbiness. The Valdarno di Sopra sits in a sheltered valley corridor that channels cool air from the Apennines, giving the wines a structural edge you rarely find in Merlot grown further south.
Valdarno di Sopra is a small, relatively recently recognised DOC covering the upper Arno valley between Arezzo and Florence. It can feel like Tuscany's best-kept secret — sandwiched between the fame of Chianti Classico to the west and the cachet of Cortona to the east, yet producing wines of real distinction, particularly from Sangiovese and — in Petrolo's hands — Merlot. The DOC allows both indigenous and international varieties and imposes fairly modest yield restrictions, meaning quality here is largely producer-driven rather than rule-driven.
