The bond between Champagne Pol Roger and Sir Winston Churchill began just after the war, at a luncheon where the 1928 vintage was served. There, Churchill met the glamorous Odette Pol Roger, sparking a friendship that lasted until his death and created ties between the two families that remain strong today.
Though Churchill never managed to visit Pol Roger’s home at 44 Avenue de Champagne - famously calling it “the most drinkable address in the world”, he showed his affection in other ways: sending Odette a signed copy of his Memoirs, naming a racehorse “Pol Roger” (which won at Kempton Park in 1953), and drinking the wines loyally.
In tribute, Pol Roger created their Prestige Cuvée in his honor, crafted with the qualities he admired most: depth, power, and maturity. The exact blend remains a closely guarded secret, but there’s little doubt it would have met with his approval: “My tastes are simple, I am easily satisfied with the best.”
What the critics say:
"Pinot Noir predominates, providing structure, breadth and robustness whilst Chardonnay contributes elegance, finesse and subtlety. Composed exclusively of grapes sourced from Grands Crus Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards which were already under vine during Churchill's lifetime. Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is only made in the very best vintages and is always released later than the other vintage dated Champagnes from Pol Roger, marking Churchill's appreciation for older wines."
