Pommard is Burgundy's great contrarian — the village that refuses to be delicate. Where Volnay floats and Beaune flatters, Pommard digs in: darker, broader, with a tannic backbone that can wrong-foot the impatient. Les Chanlins Hauts sits in the southern part of the appellation, a premier cru-adjacent lieu-dit delivering exactly that characteristic Pommard grip, but with enough fruit density and vineyard definition to make the wait worthwhile. In magnum, this 2025 will develop at half the pace, which is the whole point.
Les Chanlins Hauts occupies elevated ground in the southern sector of Pommard, where the slope flattens slightly and the limestone-rich clay soils give way to a heavier, more iron-inflected character than you find lower on the hillside. This iron in the soil is part of what gives Pommard its signature dark-fruited, sometimes rustic depth. The aspect is broadly east-facing, ensuring good morning sun without the heat stress that can soften the tannins Pommard is known for.
Pommard is a village appellation in the Côte de Beaune producing exclusively red wine from Pinot Noir — and yet it sits stylistically closer to the Côte de Nuits than most of its southern neighbours. It has no grand cru, but its premier crus, particularly Les Rugiens and Les Epenots, are among Burgundy's most serious reds. The village wines, including lieux-dits like Les Chanlins Hauts, share that same structural character: firm tannin, dark fruit, and a minerality that some read as earthy and others as simply Pommard being Pommard.
