Rustenberg is one of the Cape's great historic estates, and Peter Barlow is their flagship statement — a single-vineyard Cabernet named after the late patriarch of the family who restored the property to its current standing.
The 2022 comes from Stellenbosch, where the combination of mountain altitude, ancient soils, and long, warm growing seasons gives Cabernet a particular kind of seriousness: dense, structured, and built to last. This is not a wine that flatters immediately. It earns its keep. Dark blackcurrant and tobacco are the anchors, wrapped in well-integrated oak that adds weight without showing off.
What the critics say:
"The Rustenberg 2022 Simonsberg Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon is round and nicely fleshed out with dark fruit and savory spice. However, the wine shows pretty restraint and never feels too heavy or rich. It offers dark primary fruit with blackberry and plum that cede to supple tannins. Only fruit from the west-facing Peter Barlow vineyard is used in this 15,300-bottle release. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in barrel for 20 months, with 60% new oak. Barrels are racked every five to six months."
"Fragrant notes of lavender, blackcurrants, rosemary and sandalwood. It’s silky and polished with a full body and supple tannins. Long and delicious finish. Drink or hold."
