Romain Guiberteau crafts some of the Loire's most precise expressions of Cabernet Franc from his Saumur-Champigny vineyards. This 2022 captures everything we love about the appellation: silky red fruit, floral elegance, and that distinctive chalky minerality that makes the Loire so compelling.
The wine shows beautiful purity and restraint, with cherry and rose petal aromas leading to a palate of surprising depth. It's drinking beautifully now but has the structure to reward patience until 2035, developing those earthy, truffle-like complexities that make mature Saumur-Champigny so captivating.
The vineyards sit on the classic tuffeau chalk that defines the best sites in Saumur-Champigny, providing excellent drainage whilst retaining enough moisture for the vines. This limestone-rich soil imparts the distinctive mineral backbone that characterises the appellation's finest wines. The continental climate with maritime influence allows Cabernet Franc to ripen slowly whilst maintaining its characteristic freshness and aromatic intensity.
Saumur-Champigny is the Loire Valley's premier red wine appellation, exclusively dedicated to Cabernet Franc. Established in 1957, it covers nine communes around Saumur where the grape finds ideal expression on tuffeau chalk soils. The wines are typically more elegant and mineral-driven than their Chinon neighbours, with a distinctive floral character and fine tannin structure. The appellation has gained serious recognition in recent decades as producers like Guiberteau have shown the true potential of Loire Cabernet Franc.
The 2022 growing season in the Loire delivered one of those vintages that reminds you why this river valley has been making wine for over a thousand years. Early budbreak led into a warm, dry summer that had growers watching their vines carefully, but crucially the region's diverse soils and microclimates meant most producers could manage the heat stress without panic. What looked potentially challenging turned generous when September brought just enough rain to plump the grapes without diluting their concentration.
We find ourselves with wines that sing with pure fruit but carry real substance underneath. The Sauvignon Blancs from Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé show brilliant mineral precision alongside ripe citrus flavours, while Muscadet delivers that classic shellfish-friendly salinity with more weight than usual. Chinon and Bourgueil produced Cabernet Francs with lovely spice and enough tannin to age gracefully, though they're already drinking beautifully now. Most of these wines are hitting their stride already, with the reds showing particular charm over the next three to five years.
