Romain Guiberteau has quietly become one of Saumur's most compelling voices, crafting Cabernet Franc that speaks of chalk and limestone with uncommon elegance. His 2023 rouge captures everything we love about serious Loire reds: A wonderfully pure expression, offering bright red fruit, silky texture and limestone freshness, with effortless drinkability and cellar potential.
This magnum format will age gracefully, allowing the wine's inherent tension to soften while preserving its crystalline minerality.
The vineyards sit on Saumur's prized tuffeau limestone, a chalky bedrock that provides excellent drainage whilst retaining enough moisture for the vines. This porous limestone imparts the characteristic mineral backbone that defines great Saumur wines. The continental climate with Atlantic influences creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Franc, allowing slow ripening whilst preserving the grape's natural acidity and aromatic complexity.
Saumur Rouge represents some of the Loire's most undervalued reds, produced from Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon on limestone-rich soils. The appellation covers 38 communes across both banks of the Loire, but the best sites lie on the tuffeau limestone that gives these wines their distinctive mineral character. Unlike the more famous Chinon or Bourgueil, Saumur Rouge offers exceptional value whilst delivering the same elegant expression of Loire Cabernet Franc.
The 2023 Loire vintage feels like the region caught a break after several years of climate extremes. Spring arrived gently, without the brutal frosts that have haunted growers in recent seasons, and summer brought the kind of balanced warmth that lets vines ripen steadily rather than sprint to the finish line. We love how this steady rhythm shows in the wines — there's a naturalness to the ripening that translates into vibrant, focused flavours across the board.
What landed in our cellars has that classic Loire precision we're always hunting for, but with more flesh on the bones than some of the leaner years. The Sauvignon Blancs from Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé crackle with mineral energy while actually filling your mouth, and the Chenin Blancs from the middle Loire show beautiful balance between their natural acidity and ripe fruit character. Most of these wines are singing right now — the whites especially have hit that sweet spot where youth and drinkability overlap perfectly. The reds will reward a bit more patience, but honestly, we're already dipping into our allocations because they're so bloody delicious.
